Oh no I think road bike bugs just about to kick in.....

I suppose this is a progression, love my mountain biking, now on 3 one of which is an early 90's retro model, anyhow cut a long story short my good lady bought me the Lance Armstrong box set of which I've watched one and now am desperate to own and give some form of competition a go. Must say there also has been some motivational pictures posted up on here as well.
As ever I'm never going to win anything but love training, my road cycling experience is the Bournemouth International Triathlon in 2001 and a ride around the Isle of Wight in 2003 both on borrowed bikes and no specific training but done okay.
So I don't really want to spend a fortune, what's a reasonable budget for a half decent model? Same as a hardtail £600?
What about novices races is there a specific website like XC racer.com?

Have a look here for some good bike recommendations - I started the thread a few months ago with a similar budget to your own, and there are some great suggestions on there, including the one I eventually bought for £674 (Cannondale CAAD8 Tiagra).

The Specilaised Allez fits your budget but there are similar offerings from Trek and Giant as well as other lesser known brands like BH, Vitus and Merida that offer a bit better value for money and are most likely welded in the same factories as the big names., Scratch the surface of the bike building insdustry in the far East and its quite astonishing what really goes on!.
My advice would be to keep saving until you are closer to £800 and get a aluminium Canyon .
