Buying a car with a private plate...
Discussion
Hi all,
After a little help please. I’m picking up a new (to me car) tomorrow which has had a private plate on it. The current owner says he has changed the number plate to the original item which will be on the car on collection. No problem there.
When I transfer the funds and collect the car, what number plate should be on the V5C? The private plate or the original one? If the Private plate is on the V5C, is this a problem?
Never brought a car that had a private plate on it in the past!
Cheers
Henry

Thank you for your reply. So basically, I should be signed the V5C with the age related number plate and not one with the private plate?
Correct. Worst case he has to trust you and sign over the V5 with the private plate and you then transfer the plate back to him (at his cost). bracken78 said:

Yep. I shouldn't worry too much though, it's firmly in the vendor's interest for the plate not to be on the car when you buy it, otherwise technically it becomes yours...I had a similar situation recently where I bought a car still wearing the private plate to save time. There was a strong element of mutual trust however!
hi there.
if the V5 comes with the private plate as its assigned number plate, and the V5 is now in your name, it is now considered as you having legal title to the cherished plate, and very difficult for the previous owner to retrieve the plate unless you ( the new registred keeper ) decide to make it easy for them.
this is even if you have a signed document stating that the number plate is the previous owners etc...the dvla and plod are not interested, and the previous owner could spend a fortune on legal work with a very small or most likely nill chance of retreval.
in a nutshell, never sell a car unless you have removed the number, or unless you submit the V5 and a V317 form at the same time to the dvla; this means that as the vehicle details are transferred to the name of the new owner, the cherished number shall be put on retention in the name that was submitted on the V317 form and sent out to that named person.
as the buyer, there is nothing for you to worry about; all the hassle in the sellers side of the sale; do it wrong, and you can lose your number.
hope this helps.
