Not convinced £40k of damage to a Scag can mean "effectively written off", but still, it's got to be sickening and I hope the chap can get it repaired with no cost to him.

Great comments.

Sounds like some one the "developer" may have developed for his own profit and the person did not like deing used.. Must have done up a lot of houses to be able to afford a £200,000 car.

60k will buy a 612 these days, possibly even less.

Mix that with Ferrari main dealer prices and the extent of the damage...

Looking at that first pic in the article, the 612 really isn't a good looking car is it.

This would be an unusual thing for someone to do if they really had no idea whose car it is.

"Property developer" is one of those very vague job titles, like company director or entrepreneur which tell you almost nothing.

Surely the garage have a duty of care whilst the car is with them?

It should be covered by the garage while it's in their hands. They are ultimately responsible for it and it's safety. If a mechanic backed a fork lift into it this wouldn't be an issue but because the garage allowed someone to smash it up instead how can it be the owners fault?

I am wondering if its and ex employee or disgruntled customer of the garage. but in the same vein if its something to-do with the owner, like hes been tapping someone's wife. is it fair for the garage to fit the bill? also how did this guy get to the car? did he break in or just walk in with an axe? as I said before there is more to this.

I don't know whose fault it IS. I see this as a revenge attack. Maybe the "developer"/owner has done someone over work wise.

Thats what it seems like to me, but maybe thats just my paranoid mind.

The car owner does live 65 miles away from the garage though, you'd think if you've used a garage 65 miles away that you're far enough away from people that may not like you around your local area. I guess it's possible that the car owner told someone he was taking his car in to a garage and somebody who didn't like him followed him to the garage and then smashed it up afterwards. Probably more likely it's someone local to the garage who has an issue with the garage owner though. All just guesses though.

Got to be a personal grudge, or why wouldn't they have damaged any other cars? Possible case of mistaken identity, which would be a pig!

It's a shame in any circumstances though, as they are a truly beautiful car.

Yeah, I don't see how this is the garage's fault.

I see this car quite a bit he's had a few decent cars. I'd be surprised if it was some sort of personal attack the car was 60 odd miles away from his home. This shouldn't have happened at a ferrari dealer i'd pissed if it happened to my Zr at my local garage.

The garage has a duty of care and should provide reasonable security, especially for such expensive cars. However there must be limits on what is considered reasonable security against a very determined man with a personal grudge. No idea where the limits lie legally, but if it was my Ferrari I'd be annoyed!

Reminds me of a joke, although its a pretty terrible one.

A man took his ferrari to the dealership, and said there was something wrong with the battery. They said it might take a week as they were rather busy. They decided on a pick up date 12 days later, and off he went.

When he came back, the mechanic told him the battery was fine, and charged him 150 pounds for an hours labour trying to figure out the problem.

"Cheers mate, to be honest I only needed to leave it somewhere whilst I was on holiday, this is the cheapest place.

Except of course, when an axe weilding maniac does 40k of damage...

Looking at the pics, it looks like someone's gone out their way to crease the pillars and roof lines. That stinks of someone trying to write a car off as they're effectively 'unrepairable' panels and sections
Whilst the car's in the dealer, it's the dealers insurance that covers it. Therefore the owner won't have to pay a penny
Sounds like a good way of 'writing off' your car at someone else's expense to me, no ?
Odd that they've walked onto the dealers grounds at night and just targeted one car, destroyed it in a manner tat would write it off, and then left it without damaging anything else ?
Anyone else smell a fishy smell ?
