Is this typical of the yoof today?
Discussion
On may way home from a lovely jaunt out on Saturday, while on some wonderful country roads I stumbled across a somewhat chavved up MK2 Golf GTI. It had a stipped interior, rollcage, some rather expensive looking full on racing seats and on some silly "stretched" tyres and wide rims. It also looked like it had suspension and exhaust mods (and possibly even more).
Anyhow picture the scene, sunshine, clear skies, great visibility and an NSL country road with no houses, footpaths, turnings or junctions. Just a good stretch of "tarmac rally" style country roads with turns, dips, straights and several miles before you get to the end of it. Basically everything a driving enthusaist could ask for.
What did they do? Drive along like Miss F*cking Daisy, ok, maybe they didn't know the road or couldn't drive for toffy, but what really pissed me off was, as we entered a 30mph zone in the next village where suddenly you had parked cars, a zebra crossing, a chip shop, pavements either side of the road, reduced visibility this prick starts using WOT (you could hear their exhaust) and shot off at 50mph+, faster than they'd been driving in the NSL zone?
What gives with this unevolved mentality?
Serioulsy how stupid have you got to be?

Serioulsy how stupid have you got to be?If I was driving a fashion victim car with streched tyres, 2mm ground clearance and clown car levels of camber, I'd only risk putting my foot down in built-up areas where there are lots of people nearby to call an ambulance when my trendily-stanced car tripped over it's own suspension.
Lack of ability to judge cornering grip, fear of stone chips, fear of scraping front valance after a yump, and being a car enthusiast rather than a driving enthusiast.
The last bit makes the difference IMO, some of us will derive a pleasure from driving almost anything and doing it as much as possible, this includes testing ourself on B-roads and trying to get from A to B on the M-way without braking etc etc. The car enthusiast likes cars, likes to care for his/her car and often enjoys modifying their car.
The two aren't mutually exclusive by any stretch but you often see folk who are one or the other, and many people tend more towards one than the other, I'm a lover of driving first and my cars second.

I always seem to get middle age'd guys trying to bate me along to driving irresponsible..
I had a similar situation to your self the other day with someone in a Nissan Pathfinder - flooring it and then waiting for me to catch up.. then looking in the mirror and doing the same again so i bit after awhile and he was clearly driving out of his limits and didn't like the fact i could keep up? I decided to give him space as i felt his driving was quite erratic and aggressive - maybe he had something to prove?

Where was this! I actually think it could be my friend! If it's in Kent it could be him...He has no interest in speed or driving, all he's interested in is a car that looks like it could be feature in some V-dub magazine. I don't get the mentality, but he doesn't get why I drive an old mans car with 310bhp. Each to their own...

QFT. Agree with every word there - I (and probably most of PH) are driving first, car second. I won't touch my car with a mod unless it's going to make it a better drive. Stancing and stretching are perfect examples of ruining performance.

Most of my "mates" who are around 20 are totally like this, they don't like corners and they drive slow in them because they get seasick, even that, some of them own VTS/R Saxos who are great in corners and they never put effort in corners as it's dangerous and once they see a stretch of wide straight road in city or populated areas give it the beans.
Very strange behavior as they are no petrolheads, and never understand the joys of driving on a B-road as most of us do.

People around to show off to.It comes down to a fair amount of the aforementioned needing to show off, but also just not knowing how to drive. yoof seem to be taught you need to be in second for every bloody corner or they're only taught in built up areas and are terrified of the twisties.
Indeed, I was taught mostly on a-roads and urban areas, which is necessary - but I also countered by practising a fair deal on twisties. The upside being that you have a lot more fun, and don't hold others up. The downside of course is that you can get over confident and friendly with hedges.
And let's be honest, anyone on here with a loud zorst who hasn't given it the (safe and legal) beans going past pedestrians is either a liar or a woman

I was enjoying a rare opportunity for some roof down driving on Saturday. I'd had to pop down to Brighton Marina to pick up a sail, and decided to follow the A259 for a bit, before going cross country to Hoo, where my boat is moored.
On the outskirts of Eastbourne, I ended up behind a Peugeot 107, with the phrase 'hooning is not a crime' stuck on the back (I'd lay a good bet that the owner is on here...). Well, hooning may not be, but I'm pretty sure that 60mph+ in a 30 zone is.
I'm not moralising, as I'd been travelling well above some numbers on sticks myself, just a few miles earlier. But I was doing it on some lovely open sweeping roads in the countryside, not in a town full of penshioners...

People around to show off to.I was going to respond on behalf on "today's yoof" - then I realised that I probably don't qualify anymore being in my mid twenties. Damn! Anyway, I'd buy in to the car enthusiast vs driving enthusiast theory - it's fashionable to have a low, loud car with big speakers etc.
I'm a member on several other owners forums where it seems interest lies firmly with modifying a car for looks above all else. I find it odd, and for me it's performance above all else but I do like my stuff to look good!

Perhaps they had heard of a mythical Smart car that prowls the B roads, looking to prey on anything going less than 200mph?
(Don't worry 300, tongue in cheek).
Most likely that the stretched tyres and the suspension modifications left the thing nigh on impossible to drive on a typical pot hole strewn B road, and like previously mentioned- no one to show off to.
