Hi guys,

I've just picked up an '89 205 XS, the car is totally original and in decent overall condition.

I've got a suspicion that the car is running overly rich, It requires no choke and minimal throttle to start, when it does it'll cough and splutter till about 2000 rpm for a few seconds, eventually getting smoother until it is useable.

Once warm the car runs great and seems to be very keen, no smoke of any sort (bar a small blue puff at startup - valve stem seals I suspect).

However the car tends to stall at traffic lights or if I dip the clutch in for long enough, strangely though if I rev the car to around 1000rpm for a few seconds it'll then idle perfectly!

It's the TU3S engine with a Solex 32/34 twin choke carb

I've replaced the dizzy cap, leads, plugs and air filter.

Any thoughts on what I should be looking into next?

Cheers

Good point, I haven't looked at the position of the choke or the linkage in detail, I'm going to pick up some carb cleaner tonight and have a good old spray

Has it been idle for a while? or not used much? After giving it all a good dose of carb` cleaner make sure the small hole in the breather pipe union is not blocked. Also don't forget the ignition timing is adjustable on those old carb` models. Then give it a good thrashing for ten miles or so to "clean the engine" it can work wonders.

It's been in frequent use for the past couple of weeks, I'll go over all the hoses tonight and triple check there are no obvious leaks. Could well be a timing issue I suppose.

I'll be changing the belt and water pump soon so hopefully those sort of issues should be obvious at that time.

Looking forward to a good old Italian tuneup tonight biggrin
