Oulton Park - 23rd June

Hi all,

Loving the series so far and can't wait for Oulton Park - only been once (trackday) so will be another schoolday in terms of having so much to learn.

A couple of things about the circuit to help with my preparation.

What will the course layout be? Is it the full or shortened circuit? Are we using Shell Oils corner or turning at Island bend/Cascades?

For the start of the race, particularly while they're all bunched up, what location will be best? I'm thinking 'Hizzy's chicane' or 'Lodge corner'? But are there better places?

I managed to find a guide Matt Sayle did which is interesting but doesn't contain the above information.

Also, can't thank some people enough for their hospitality/generosity - the opportunities I've had this year have been brilliant.

I would guess the best spot would be either the outside of Old Hall or at the bottom of Cascades. Whilst there are certainly shots to be had at Hislops and Lodge I think the field will be a little too spread out by the time it gets to one and then the other to give you the bunched up shot you want.

Do you think it would be possible to catch them through Casecades and then run across to Hislops - try and get both in? They don't look too far apart - it depends if you can get to them in a straight line, I suppose.

Any idea on the track layout, yet?

the britcar site say its the international but then again it did say donington was on the gp circuit not the national so you never can tell

Probably but I've never tried it so I don't know for sure and I don't have a clue as to which track layout they'll use. I certainly will be there as it's my local circuit so looking forward to not doing a 16 hour day.

As an Oulton Park regular of 30 odd years (and now a Little Budworth resident), I would recommend either the 'classic' Oulton shot taken on the outside of the circuit on the exit of Lodge, or my favourite of on the inside of the circuit, say 100 yards after Old Hall (both looking back up the circuit, obviously)

With hardly any of it in focus, what makes you keep pic 17? I take so many like that, experimenting with really slow speeds, to try and get the right effect (or just different effects), but I end up binning them simply because I don't like the look of them. However, i like yours. Weird, huh? If I have any of reasonable quality I'll post for your opinions.

For the Andy Shultz head shot I think I was stood right next to ya

I'll post some pics up soon - had a lens issue ( it just wouldn't autofocus) which has rubbished over a thousand shots. Just hoping I can recover some of the not so bad ones.

Not sure what you mean about pic 17; it's perfectly focused it's just hard to see it through the motion blur. The reason I kept it is because that is the desired affect, what else would you expect when shooting at 1/25th of a second?

Unfortunately at that speed it doesn't matter how steady your hands are you will always suffer/benefit from parallax shift. This is due to the front, middle and rear of the car all moving on different planes to the sensor. The bit in the middle of the car which is sharpest is the section that was exactly parallel with the sensor when the shutter opened. The blurry parts either side were either moving away or towards the sensor and because it was such a slow shutter speed the effect is very noticeable in the form of motion blur.

Whether it is a desirable effect is down to personal taste, I like it because it creates a great sense of speed but other may hate it because it's too blurry. Why your shots don't work I can't say until I've seen them however the key for me is that a part of the car must be sharp.

I wasn't being disrespectful or derogatory - I did say I liked it its just I don't seem to like mine, despite getting a very similar (and desired like you say) effect. I was just curious as to why you liked it, what makes that effect acceptable that's all. Always willing to learn!!
I'll try and dig similar out for critique.

So, in future i'll make sure I look to make sure some of car is in focus before resigning it to the bin.

Don't worry I didn't think you were being disrespectful hence the smiley in my post. Why do I like it? No idea. What makes it acceptable? Who said it was? I strongly suspect we only do these kind of shots just to show off to other photographers. Send it to a sponsor and I can guarantee they'd hate it; in the end it's a pretty picture that's a bit different from the usual, you like it, I like it and maybe even Warren Gilbert likes it.

Looks fine to me. The F1 photographers often take shots where none of the car is even close to being sharp, I'm not keen on them but plenty of people obviously are as they appear all the time.

It was seeing this effect with F1 cars (though not the extreme effect) that kinda inspired me to give that effect a go. Maybe I don't like mine because they're mine and I don't rate my shots that highly, who knows.

All my F1 shots are like that - they move too fast and my aging and ailing waist just can't rotate quick enough

Adam, we suffered with Media at Oulton because there were BTCC, F3/GT and Silverstone Classic meetings on the same weekend. As far as I know, Jurek (Jurbie), Scott (Kybo), Mick Herring, and Dave and Lisa from View Photographic were the only Britcar regular photographers who signed-on.

I was extremely disappointed with my performance and the focus issues of my Sigma lens. I managed to get a few (but have had to bin around 800 shots).
