Hi all. I'm pretty pi55ed by the going on of this afternoon.

I received an E-mail from my insurer instructing me that they would be taking an additional £127.40, to cover the omitted conviction on my licence. WTF!! I thought. So I called them, and as usual got their friendly call centre on the other side of the world!! It turns out that I had ran a quote last month on a comparison website, as I was considering buying a second car. It would appear that I entered that I had a conviction, in error, in 2008. Now due to one of Admiral's sister companies quoting me, the conviction has been flagged, and they have taken it that I neglected to tell them about a conviction, and have seen fit to charge me for it!! Surely this can't be legal? The guy asked me if I had proof of NCB from 2006 when my last conviction was from?? What!? Surely a customer has to legally notify an insurer of such changes and premiums can't just be taken from customers in such circumastances??

I was on the phone for ages trying to sort this out!! They wanted to have a conference call with myself, their manager and the DVLA!! I couldn't believe it!! This is the first I've heard of this, and certainly the strangest thing I've ever heard! I know folk who run quotes fairly regularly to see how much a prospective purchase would cost, and sometimes change circumstances, i.e. points, to see what the worst case scenario would be.

I E-mailed them a copy of my licence, which they say will take 2 hours to view!! They must still have dial up internet in their office!!

Beware if running quotes these days by the looks of it!!

They tried the same with me.

Eventually they agreed that I had not claimed from them in the past year, and therefore simply siphoning money from my account was not really on.

Bizarre, but I suppose it must work out for them.

If I run a comparison quote and change my sex to 'female' will they refund me as I have grown (bigger) breasts?

You mean you did a quote with a different address and it caused problems? I only ask as i'm potentially moving house in the next few months and did an insurance quote yesterday to see what affect it would have on my premium.

Good one, I'll remember that in future!!

Still st though!! Basically I could pick someone I don't like, and run numerous insurance quotes through the various comparison sites and cause havok!!?? Surely a few of the companies will be linked!!

Ah, there's my afternoon sorted!!

So have the conference call and get the matter cleared up. What's the problem?

The problem is someone taking money from my bank account for no reason.

I work overseas and don't always have access to E-mails. This could have been missed, easily. And if I caught up with it when I got home I'm sure it would be a fight trying to get a refund.

And as I have E-mailed them a copy of my licence, as per OP, there should be no need for a conference call! That's just ridiculous!

I think Soovy was perhaps having a laugh smile

A conference call with the DVLA? It would be easier getting David Cameron on the blower!

Actually, thinking about it it probably wouldn't have been that difficult. There's been a few cases I've been hiring a car and forgotten my licence and the hire company has got through to DVLA immediately!

Still, I don't think I should have this hassle when I have not notified my insurers of a change in circumstance.

On the other hand, you've put in for a conviction you don't have on another website, why? Personally, I'm glad that they're checking up on these things as insurance fraud costs us all a bag load of cash

My last conviction was 2006, exactly 2 years before the 2008 I typed in error.

Checking up is one thing, automatically taking an extra £130 due to a typing mistake on a quote website is somewhat different.

ETA: It must be possible these days for you to enter your licence number and the website links to the DVLA database, and automatically pulls through your details, including points / convictions etc. Problem solved, no more incorrect details.

Tell them since they are charging a "premium" they should get off their own arses and do the call themselves.

Same here , only last month.

They wanted extra for a so called undeclared claim .

It was a windscreen claim they had mistakenly taken as an accident claim !

I would have thought so!!

I just called Admiral to see if they had received my E-mail. Not yet apparently! But I spoke to someone in the Swansea office who seemed far more knowledgable and helpful. He said there is a new thing now called a "hunter system" and it monitors all of these comparison websites etc, and flags up with companies if there are any differences to the info provided at the time of taking a policy. He said it's happened quite a lot nowadays, and wishes it was better known as it's proving to be a pain for them. He said it's very important that all info is exact and accurate, so no more running quotes out of curiosity!! My last SP 30 was Feb '06, and for some reason I inputted Feb '08!?!? He told me he believes it's an error, but they have to satisfy the paper trail!! What a pain!!
