is it OK to store a car uninsured and SORN?
Discussion
Hi all
wondering if you can help me? my car insurance is due and they want a lot to insure it at my London address. I also have another address with a driveway where the quote would be cheaper but they have to quote on the higher risk address even if the car would not ever be there. This does make sense and I can see why they do it as lots of people may try it on but I don't really need the car in London and I would just like it insured on the driveway for the off chance I might use it for a long trip but this isn't possible.
So I am thinking of just letting the insurance lapse and declaring it SORN for a bit while I decide whether I can live without a car.
Not fussed about the risk of theft as the car is not worth much however what would happen in the unlikely event that my car decided to self combust and it took another car/house(!) with it?
The other cars on the drive would be insured and so is the house
Thanks!
Andy

If you're declaring the car SORN as you say, then yes, it's absolutely legal to have it off the road and not insured.
They passed legislation recently that says if you left it taxed (and off the road) then they'll assume you're using it on the road and would do you for not showing up as insured. But that's not an issue for you.
As a side note, if you're worried about having it nicked/set on fire while it's off the road, you can look into storage insurance.

Cheers for the advice hope they will let me claim the 3 months tax back at least!I am not too fussed about the risk to the car itself, its only worth a grand or so, I was more wondering if it did catch alight/handbrake cable snap etc. and damaged the house or other cars would this be covered by their respective policies? I know its unlikely but I don't fancy being left with a massive bill from trying to save a few quid over the next few months!
Thanks again
Andy
