Chaps,

I wonder if you can help. I and a couple of friends have etched out an idea for a website that we believe will be of use to car enthusiasts, and have tried to start spreading the word via car forums, but are a little unsure of how we should be going about it.

We registered the website name as a user name and created a new profile on here tonight, we were politely told that it was wrong to register a profile as a company name, and that we shouldn't have posted up the name of the website. (Mods: Apologies for doing so)

We are not web developers, or spammers, just car enthusiasts that want to promote what we think is a good idea. How can we do it without upsetting people?

We're not looking to make a profit, as such haven't set aside a budget for marketing. The idea was that the website would be there to help people looking to buy a used car, and read reviews from previous owners.

I suppose our benefit was to come from our own future car purchases.

I did see your original post.

Other than spending some money ( ie. sponsoring on various automotive sites) it is very difficult and maybe a slow burner to get individual users recommending the service - usually through friend/ colleagues. Etc. to begin with.

I am unsure whether i would ever use this service, but could be useful to high end cars. So might be worthwhile talking to an individual car make forum, get a good name and then spread to other brands?

I am no marketing expert, but a single thread that will get lost/ banned on PH is not the way to go!

Mike,

Thanks for the pointers, in all fairness I kicked the site off because I had to sell my Porsche 911 (996) to a dealer who knew one of the headgaskets was on it's way out. Rather than fix it he cleaned it, and put it up for sale overnight! Someone bought that car for about £18k and no doubt had a huge surprise on their hands.

In all honesty I think you're right, I used to frequent the Porsche part of this forum, and regularly saw "Does anybody know this car" threads, so perhaps I will focus on a couple of brands, and see if I can build up interest that way.

Cheers for the advice.
