Anyone fancy some offroading?
Discussion
As we've almost certainly got a miscellany of offroad vehicles on the Yorkshire section would anyone be up for a bit of PH offroading?
I don't mean winches, knobbly mud tyres, clothing from Rohan and dinging our cars. More like some gentlemanly offroad fun followed by a damned good breakfast. In fact we could make our own breakfast on the top of a hill somewhere. Or we could just go to Hotel du Vin in Harrogate like I normally do.
As we'd be going where normal cars fear to tread we wouldn't need a silly early start too.
I see two options: one is doing our own route, the second is going on a "pay to play' offroad place. Either fine with me. I know one or two good places but perhaps not enough to give more than an hours worth of offroading. If anyone knows more then let me know and maybe we could link up a bigger route.
So, make your mark below if you're up for it.

I'm not sure my high-mileage automatic pretend 4x4 Honda CRV would be up to the job but I'll keep an eye on this and see how it develops.
Hmm, I'm not quite sure about the capabilities of the CRV. I can say though that on the track I had in mind I used offroad height in the Rangie (18 inches), low range box (essential) and took it very, very slowly.Breakfast at the Hotel du Vin would be a very pleasant way to end the morning
(although happy with a camping stove on t'moors or somewhere like The Wellington at Darley).
My preference (although pretty relaxed either way), would be reasonably early so that we can finish in time for breakfast and not eat into the day too much, doing some of the open green lanes / BOATs rather than an organised site. However, I can only do alternate weekends and with the holiday season on us I only have Sunday 24th free until end of July!

Yep, with you on that Al. Two options I guess:
Early - meet up around Harrogate at 6.30am, driving until about 8.30/9am, breakfast, off.
Not early - Meet up around 8am, drive until 10 ish, brecky.
I'm quite keen on the early one too. Lots of light at the moment and leaves the day free.
June 24th works.

HdV breakfast is a real winner but quite pricey. I take wifey and 3 year old daugher every couple of weeks, rarely get much change from £60 but the sausages are worth it alone
However I'd be happy to stick my gas bbq and a pan in the back of the car so we can do bacon rolls and coffee up on a mountain somewhere...
Don't know Mastiles lane, I'll have a look. I don't know may routes up here tbh, will need to do some research. The route I've been on is Kirkby Moor Road down to Gouthwaite Reszervoir. Looks like a normal road on Googlemaps. It isn't! Totally legit to drive down too.

See what others think but £20 a head for breakfast may be a bit off putting
Mastiles Lane goes from Kilnsey (as in Crag) over the top to Malham Tarn. Used to do it a lot on the mountain bike about fifteen years ago. No idea what it is like now. Happy to stick with your tried and tested routes. I really have no wish to knack the car as it looks quite nice when it's polished

Ok, I'll have a bit of a think. If anyone knows of any interesting tracks/trails please give me a shout.
As for cars - really, don't worry. Yes, cars will get dirty but there really is very little chance of damaging anything. Below are the pics of last time I was on the route I'm thinking of.

The bottom two pics are very, and I mean very steep. Think 35 degrees. On the last one I was using offroad height, low range, hill descent control. I could have done it without HDC but it is quite nice to have a Marlboro and watch the red kites as one is descending
From a quick bit of googling it seems that the lane up by Kilnsey is closed to traffic. I'll double check as the satellite photos I looked at are pretty cool.

You can be my winch man any time
I've just sorted the route(s) I think, will email now.
Anyone else that is (seriously) interested give me a shout.
This is firming up as:
Meeting point TBC. If people agree on route I would suggest Grassington. Early. Sunday June 24th.
We'll be doing about 1.5-2hrs of actual offroad driving, plus your return time home.
A normal 4x4 on road tyres will be sufficient. I will do a recce run before to check it all out.
Provisional routes are available if you PM me.
