Was just wondering, after a trip up the A3 to Guildford yesterday, why is it that the traffic, white van man included, is happy to potter along at 70/75 until he gets to the tunnel when its throttle off and slow down to 55/60 all the way through, and of course to hog the right hand lane.

Was just wondering is all !confused

The tunnel speed limit is 50mph and it is controlled by SPECS cameras.

Speed limit is 70, unless there is an 'incident' or a load of hooligans approaching then they make it 40.

As for them hogging the outside lane, I nip inside and give them both bores.

I wonder if the unknowing see the yellow vultures on their perches and think they must be there 'for a reason' (i.e. to enforce a lower than NSL speed limit) so ease off a bit.

Doesn't seem to happen so much in the Hangleton Tunnel on the Brighton by-pass (A27) perhaps because it has been around for longer - and doesn't have yellow vultures.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. People automatically equate yellow vultures with 50mph limits, no matter what the signage says.

As for hogging the outside lane, that's the holier than thou attitude that states, "I'm travelling at the speed limit so no one should need to come past." Morons!

this, tts not knowing the national speed limit, though i do believe that the NSL is reduced for vans over a certain weight therefore dropping them to 60? still no excuse to hog the outside lane, the inconsiderate, hairy arsed sons of biiiiitch's.

sorry off on a rant there!!

How enforcible are the dubious solid white lines between the 2 lanes as you go through....?

I was following a bunch of hooligans a little while back on a Sunday morning, and they dropped the speed limit.

Vans in excess of 3.5 tons gvw are restricted to 60 mph in national speed limit dual carriageway & 50 on single carriageways, 70 on motorways.
Many years ago when there was a fuel crisis, speed limits were dropped to 50 mph on single carriageways & 60 on dual. I'm sure a very high percentage of drivers on the road still think this is the case, well, we have one of them in our midst ha ha

That includes non-car-derived vans under 3.5 tons, and minibuses iirc.

How DO they do that?! Have cameras further along north and south A3? Noise sensors? I've NEVER been through it without it having 50mph displayed?! EXCEPT Last Friday when it was single lane doing 20mph grrrrr.... still managed to get a decent windows open V12 high RPM noise smile BUT how would they know that in advance of cars arriving?

According to BiB on here they aren't actually solid and overtaking IS allowed.

I've found that the percentage of tts who don't know what the NSL sign means is starting to reduce.

And yes, there does seem to be some kind of detector system which spots when a few cars are going slowly and automatically invokes the 40MPH limit*, be careful on TR's guys!

  • Any chance of confirmation from Bib/HATO?

Guess they monitor it from the control room. We were alright on the way up, but 40 signs came on as we entered the tunnel on the way back.
