Hi All,

With 997 3.6 & 3.8S prices falling to low £20k what will happen to 996TT prices??

Are they holding?

If I purchase a 996TT today for £25k & a £25k 997 what will be worth more in 5 years time?

Almost certainly the Turbo would be worth a bit more, but neither are investments so buy the one you prefer. Both will lose money to some extent.

To answer the question, in my opinion (but trying not to speak as a biased 996t owner) I think the turbo will lose less money for three reasons:

1) It is already further down its depreciation curve/timeline which, extraordinary factors excluded, usually means a car loses less per year, as the years go on.
2) It is, by far, the cheapest way into a 911 turbo, which is a poster car for many.
3) It doesn't suffer from the same engine problem reputation that plagues the n/a models.

I hadn't realised the 996GT2 and 997GT3RS4.0 (to name but two) were air-cooled....

I also guess there are alot less 996tt available for sale/on the road?

PH has only 88 for sale compared to say n/a 996/997/997s even 997TT'

So I guess a little more rare?

I want 4 seats....two young boys......but don't want to lose heaps of cash.

Yup, buy a decent one, keep it in good nick and you shouldn't lose too much (and certainly not much when compared to the pleasure you'll get from it).

Some ferraris are appreciating. Why not mention those? the OP isn't interested in those either.

Pretty much any £25K 911 would fit that bill if bought wisely i.e. no hidden moneypit.
The most you could possibly lose in depreciation in 5 years is about £10K either way. Possibly a tad more on the cooking 997. But even the most pessimistic return would be £10K on resale and probably closer to £15K in reality. The turbo might even be still worth close to £20K if you are lucky. All dependent on condition, mileage and history.

If those numbers are of any concern, this isn't the car for you.

At this stage in its life, depreciation isn't the main thing to be concerned about ! If you don't want to lose money, your looking at the wrong car... you can spend thousands on maintenance on these things if you don't buy right - and even if you do buy right, you'd better have a contingency fund.

Good luck tho.

Agree that the depreciation curve of the 996 turbo seems to have stabilized a bit now. But as already pointed out they are not cheap to run. So as long you looked after it well then you could probably expect not to lose too much. However keeping it in this tip top condition will not be cheap and could cost you big money if anything serious should go wrong. So you will either have to shell out for a good warranty for piece of mind, or keep a pretty healthy slush fund of a good few grand.

996 turbo does not equal cheap motoring regardless of lack of depreciation.Cheapest thing about them seems to be the insurance for some strange reason !

Relatively speaking, my 996 turbo was cheap to run over 3yrs. Outside of servicing, warranty and a change of tyres there were no major bills.

OP, as the TT is the older car it would appear that it is going to hold its value better than the early 7s (non-turbos). As others have alluded to, I would personally suggest that what is more important is buying a good one - whatever that may be.
