Fast cars that fall under the insurance radar
Discussion
As per usual I've been scouring the autotrader challenging myself to find a decent replacement for the MR2. I'm only willing to spend the same money on it (around £1K) and have found some worthy replacements. However, every time I find something I like, I hop onto a comparison site for an insurance quote and they're all £700-£900! I wouldn't mind but I'm 30, with 3 points and 12 years driving experience so it shouldn't be that! I'm only talking Mondeo ST220's, Omega 3.2's, etc so nothing ridiculous.
It made me think though, are there actually any cars out there now with around 200bhp, waftability and reasonable insurance? I'm swaying more to keeping the MR2 as I have a classic policy so the insurance costs me £400 a year for me and the wife!

Any kit or classic.
My 5-litre Chimaera costs me less to insure than my 1.6 Focus and my Porsche 924 costs ... wait for it ... £215 a year.

My modded Chimarea 500 has the cheapest insurance premiums I have ever had to pay for a car. (Just over £300, all mods declared of course)
I think you would struggle to find a better performing (or sounding!) car for the insurance money.
ETA: Don't bother trying to get quotes from comparison sites though, it will need to be a specialist insurer. Look for the PH TVR Insurance Wiki

Early Audi S-cars - admittedly they can end up costing most of what you save back in terms of maintaining the feckers but on a pure insurance front they offer cracking value for money. When me and a mate had a Ur-S4 as a toy I could insure it for less than half of what I was paying on the scooby.
My 944 S2 Cab costs me £262 a year, ok in PH terms it isnt super fast but it still gets a move on when hustled, I dont remember when 200 odd bhp became slow myself !
Apparently £260 odd quid isnt that cheap for a 944, some do it for well under £200 but Ihave 3 points and a minor parking indescretion

Agree on the quick (relatively) Volvos... for me, an 850 R or V70R came in significantly cheaper than a Vectra GSi, Zafira GSi, Astra SRi Turbo and hence I bought one. The really ironic thing is my 97 850R is cheaper to insure than my 99 V70 TDi on a like for like policy. Nope, I don't understand it either.

I have a 1979 924 sitting in the garage in pristine showroom condition (passed on by death of wifes uncle). I insure that for 35 quid a year with Hagerty. My 5-litre Chimaera costs me less to insure than my 1.6 Focus and my Porsche 924 costs ... wait for it ... £215 a year.
Also Porsche 911 carrera cab and Lotus esprit turbo on a joint policy was only 200 quid a year!
my previous cossie powered TVR S was only 174 quid (all mods declared)
I am guessing your not with Hagerty lol
