Audi Rs4 b5, Rs6 c6 or Subaru ?
Discussion
Planning ahead to the winter I want another fastish 4x4 for the daily commute when the weather is rubbish 154 miles round trip ( every day ) m25 and fast A roads.
Now in the dry and ok weather the 7 series is the perfect car IMHO but in the rain etc 2 tonnes with the rear end out isnt much fun at 6 am or 9 pm !!
Originally was thinking about a Subaru outback as ideally wanted an auto for the m25 so the rs6 is the obvious audi choice but can't help but love the rs4.
Would use it circa 300 miles a week for 6 months has to be reliable ( or I don't get paid !! ) and then sporadically in the summer.
Mpg well most of its motorway at a steady ish 70 get 35 from the 7 which is great hopping for 25ish ( Subaru will do 28 and is the obvious choice !! )
The problem is man maths !!
Advice greatfully received, budget 6k for Subaru think 06 done 60k or up to 12k for the audis.

Thanks for the input a very mixed bag apart from no one suggesting the rs6, I think I will go and have a look at the rs4's this weekend the only thing putting me off is the fact its a manual and the fact you can't really legally tow with them.
But it really would be my preference I think but then again the subaru does everything .... This is why I am so confused !!

The only thing that concerns me about the golf is doing 150 miles a day in one, my only reference to a golf (I.e. A short wheelbase car) is a one series which due to the short wheel base I found really choppy on the motorway but great on a roads.
Worth having a look at the r32 though
Thanks

the biggest problem with the R32 is the poor economy Worth having a look at the r32 though

i had thought about an S4 V8 for the OP but 12k only seams to get the dregs ...
some tidy S3s about for that money thou

i guess it depends on how old and how much millage the op is happy with, 36000 miles a year is a lot to hammer on an older RS type car

erm I don't see why you need AWD to drive on the M25? Firstly it generally see's very little snow, and second, it's a motorway. So likely to be kept clear of snow more so than almost any other road type. Not saying don't buy a car, or even an AWD one, but this does seem like a very weak reasoning behind it.

As per original post, have m25 and A roads and infact some country lanes. Not saying don't buy a car, or even an AWD one, but this does seem like a very weak reasoning behind it.
From memory 40 miles m25, but its the other 37 ish miles of rubbish roads, can easily loose the value of the car if I miss 6/7 days of work a year.
Hence whist it seems extreme it makes financial sense
Hope that explains

On a serious note. I'm not sure a high performance low slung AWD drive car will really get you to work any better than a well driven RWD, even more so on the right tyres. From memory 40 miles m25, but its the other 37 ish miles of rubbish roads, can easily loose the value of the car if I miss 6/7 days of work a year.

If it's truly about beating such conditions you need more ground clearance, the right tyres and an AWD system capable of handling proper slippery conditions. And I say this based on experience. The worst thing to get past are stranded cars, so having the ability to climb a curb, a bank or even into a field can be priceless in such conditions. To this extent if it's a weather beater you are wanting I'd seriously be looking at proper 4x4's or compact SUV's fitted with either winter tyres or a good set of all terrains.
A TCS equipped Freelander would work well, or in fact any Land Rover or Jeep product pretty much. Subaru Forrester might be a pretty good compromise between car and 4x4 and they do a quick one as well.
