time for a change Z4MC to z4/boxster/350z
Discussion
Its time for a change and after 3 years the Z4MC is going to be replaced with a cheaper weekend car, freeing up some money to be spent on the track car and a tow car.
After a Tuscan a few years a go i fancy some open top motoring again
Rules:
- fairly reliable, (so no TVRs or really old stuff, the Tuscan was always being fixed when i wanted to use it)
- No 4 cylinder engines
- £8k budget
thinking
3l Z4
Boxster S (2003)
350z (although its about 300kg heavier!)
left field:
Jag XKR (old shape)?
what should i get?
What do i need to look out for?

Do you really think 8k is enough for a reliable Boxster S that wont keep you awake at night as it sits in the drive? Even a 3l Z4 is going to be leggy at that price. Im thinking along the same lines as you and I honestly cant see how Im going to get into either for less than 13-14.After a Tuscan a few years a go i fancy some open top motoring again

The 350Z is only one there that I think offers some peice of mind at that price point I would say. But ye gods, those interiors....
Another left field option could be E46 330Ci convertible. Ive considered these also but worry that Im buying something two models out of date and quite obviously, whilst the Z4 design hasnt changed.

The E46 330Ci Cab is not two models out of date - it is one model of out of date. The E93 is not due for replacement until 2014. It is also wrong to say the Z4 design hasn't changed - it was replaced in 2009 with an all-new model with folding hardtop roof. The E85 Z4 is a largely E46 based vehicle so both are very much of the same 'era'.

As a Z4 3.0i owner I suggest you get the Boxster S. I couldn't handle downgrading to a lesser version of the same car, at least the Porsche could be considered a 'sidestep'.
Have you looked at the SLK350? A little bit over budget but a really nice car and worth a look.
Shame about the no 4 pot criteria otherwise an S2000 would be perfect.

Will do some research on the IMS issue, but there seem to be lots of boxsters at the £8k mark, so there must be a good one....
Z4 down grade does concern me, but have driven a friends 3.0 Si coupe and it's fun in isolation, except the run flats
S4 - V8 would be awesome, will have a look, but being based on a saloon it won't feel like a sports car. The difference in feel between the M3 and Z4 is night and day.
Should add the car will be a wkend / sunny day car, but handle a driving holiday in Europe trouble free. C5k miles per year.

Except of course for the well known engine issues
Don't you think an 8 grand Boxster will be passed the IMS worry, or atleast less likely? Take a look on the Porsche specialists website or search it on here.
I considered a Boxster S and a 996 and came to the conclusion that unless you are willing to accept the possibility of a £5k bill don't buy one.
And as I've mentioned before a mate has a GT3 - the one that isn't affected by failure - funny how he's had 3 in 4k then. They have just replaced the crank under warranty.

Corvette C4? Either a full vert or all the coupes have a removable roof panel. 5.7 V8 and probably a 6 speed manual for your budget. Rock solid residuals too and cheap to run. After a Tuscan a few years a go i fancy some open top motoring again

I sold a fantastic example of a BMW Z4 3.0i last year for just shy of 9k; this figure was over book value and more than other Z4's advertised with similar age/spec/mileage. The car had 50k miles on the clock, was in as new condition, with nearly every option.
The op will find a great Z4 for £8k, I couldn't recommend that option enough. I can't be certain with the Boxster S, but it's probably a similar story.
Bad advice, Reardy Mister.
