This is not meant to be a stupid question, but how do you fit them? Is there a trick?

I did one some months ago and it took forever and it was not easy on my hands. The other now has semi-permanent cable ties round it because I can't face changing it.

A bit of red rubber grease to get it on and a good big stainless jubilee clip round it to give fine adjustment.

I found some grease (well copper slip actually) worked along with a LARGE screwdriver and / or a long 1/2 inch drive extension bar. Don't forget plenty of swearing, stamping of feet and some grazed knuckles too ! smile

Fairy liquid and all of the above.

Done the job twice now and jubilee clips or metal tidy ties are a must.

Do you bend the tabs so they're flat and then bend them back again afterwards?

No - if you have the right rubbers they should just slip* over them.

  • For very small values of the term "slip" involving lube and swearing

You should ask. Do I fit top or bottom first? For me it was top and a trip to the medical cupboard after.

Bending the tabs is the correct method, no force needed to fit rubbers, no lube required either! whistle

Bending the tabs will weaken them.

I've not had one break on any of the cars I've been working on over the years!

Then you have been working on cars where the exhaust hangars are nothing like as rusty as the ones I have been working on! hehe

The ones on the Cerb were fine. Just done a 1994 Astra and they were perfect! smile

Boil a kettle drop the rubbers in to a container with hot water put some gloves on leave them in there for a good few minutes they should go on easy after that,

Hi UKK,

I have done this 4,372 times now. It is pure pain

BUT

The hangers on the chassis are on a thread with a locknut.
If you undo the locknut half a turn then the hangers will invert and you will have a better chance of sliding on the rubbers.

I have used rubber grease and it works more easily

BUT

was amazed how much easier they slid on if the grease was fresh ( and had not been lying around on the rubbers overnight for example )

I have replaced the hangers on mine with some studding.
They're longer than the original hangers which makes lining up the exhaust much better especially useful if you have sports pipes. and also fitting the rubbers a doddle. just slide them on and a nut and lock nut to stop them falling off. :-)
