any paid employment anywhere for a 23 yr old?
Discussion
Friends of ours are trying to get work for their 23-yr-old son who is stuck in his room with a lack of confidence.
Do any PHers have any work positions going, anywhere in the UK?
The bod in question is massively intelligent and physically strong. He has brilliant computer and English skills, he built his own computer, can write superbly and is physically creative given the chance, but will do literally anything as long as it pays enough to let him eat and rent somewhere to live within reach of the job by public transport.
Any help or thoughts most gratefully received.

He'd move anywhere in the UK for a basic job? I'm surprised he needs to, there are still jobs out there despite what the press may suggest. Has he tried the usual suspects such as shelf-stacking in the local supermarket etc?
If I lost my current job I'm relatively confident I could be flipping burgers or washing cars within a month or two at most, and I'd be quite happy to do that rather than have to live off JSA!

Not meaning to sound greedy or unrealistic on his behalf but he needs a job that will allow him to rent somewhere to live, plus eat. Not sure washing cars will be enough for that?If I lost my current job I'm relatively confident I could be flipping burgers or washing cars within a month or two at most, and I'd be quite happy to do that rather than have to live off JSA!

Pretty much any minimum wage job can just about cover somewhere to live and eat, although it won't be pleasant. If he's prepared to work the anti-social hours then he'd probably get more than minimum wage if he worked graveyard shifts in a supermarket or something surely?
Are there no call centres in the local area he can try?
Alternatively, try and get him to volunteer, it will stand him in very good stead from a CV point of view when he does eventually apply for paid work!
What about railway labouring? I know it could be waste of his creative talents, and most labourers on there are knuckle draggers but there is work, He will need a PTS and a Track induction course, will cost money, perhaps borrow it from parents

+1 for getting a basic supermarket job immediately, even if he has to stay at home. It will give him confidence and should ideally encourage him to find a better job for more money. Waiting for an ideal job is a waste of time. In my opinion, the parent(s) that force their child into a part time job or full time summer job between secondary school and college are doing their kids a massive favour.
