Gurston School Day - 12th June excellent fun ..

Well the weather tried to do its worst but we all got a dry window for the day .. I drove through 12" to 15 " deep floods as raging torrents on the A272 < 3 times > as the other roads were closed going west on the south coast .....

What a great day and JJ's little Mini did its thing very sucessfully : hats off to the boys & girls at Gurston: socially so much more fun that track days and I've done lot of those over the years ...

FWD meant I had to go back to thinking how to keep front grip all the time and very much back to my old mad 1430 mini days : I will need a new diff if I really want to play going up the hills; A quaife more than likely but open to suggestions ... and that Karousel set of corners is bloody steep ..

Highly recommend the Gurston Down School as a different committed car driving day < fathers days > and probably a lot more beneficial than jumping straight into a sprint or hill climb: still surprises me why people just go along to pootle at HC's & Sprints

as said by one GD instructor : you have to give it the beans and not make a mistake ..

SO thank you GD school ... a great day

Your MINI certainly appeared to have a huge amount of power. With forced induction you'll end up in the over 2ltr class at Gurston and be up against various Mitsubishi Evo's and Subarus's so you may need 4 wheel drive as well as an LSD. You did well to tame the power without an LSD though thumbup

I don't know what size engine the car has, but forced induction adds 40% to the cubic capacity. It would therefore need to be at least 1440 cc to be put into the over 2 litre class.

I think that the modern Cooper S, and Cooper, has a capacity in the region of 1600cc.

I wasn't sure if it was an old or new one. If it is a BMW Mini then your observation is quite correct. smile

Well its a BMW Mini < BBR Cooper S works >
so that knocks me into 2300cc equivalence as per MSA : mad
so it sets me against the 4wd mob aka evo / scooby etc
David and Goliath tricks if I do I guess angel
I'll sort the diff as its just is a bugger at the moment < quaife ? >
and just have a go and see what the results are on the clock : The idea for the GD day was to see how the mini would go and if it could be remotely competitive ?
+ I'm really interested to see if I can get quicker on the hills : against myself mainly and compare other cars to see where it all leads :

no longer a lightweight spring chicken biglaugh

There was a young chappy @ the day with a 400+ bhp evo which was damn quick but he wasn't able to get it to work for him ... so there is always a nut behind the wheel factors at play

When I covered the 2012 Crystal Palace Sprint http://rwils.zenfolio.com/cp-motorsport-2012
( see slide 107 car # 18 : I'm always looking for folks who will give me as a photographer the shots )
the other week I was amazed at the number of folks who were just pootling up the course:
its just that I like to see what can be done and I like seeing other try to push themselves and the car :

The GD boys views that hills need controlled and committed but not over the edge ... smokin

Do you mean this picture http://rwils.zenfolio.com/cp-motorsport-2012/h2a0b...?
Brilliant picture. Pity you weren't on the spectator side of the fence at Ashes on the Gurston day when the yellow three wheeler tipped over on it's side and the driver put his hand out to right it! Luckily it's exhaust pipe prevented it rolling right over. Someone got that on video so maybe it will appear on You Tube sometime.

I'm sure there's a lot more to come from your MINI when you get the LSD and some grippier 'list 1b' tyres. It'll be good to see a MINI take the fight to the four wheel drive boys.

Are you sure? To start hillclimbing you'll only need a non-race National B licence for which I'm sure you do not need a medical (assuming you have no previous medical problems which might exclude you).

For a Non-Race licence you only need to fill in the medical declaration and give your doctors details. A medical is only required for Race licences for drivers over 45, (and all International licences).

P.s. I love the photos of Crystal Palace, you took some great ones of my Clan, really caught the day.
