Cars on ferries

Anyone with any experience of their car being strapped down in a ferry?

I have a crossing to Ireland booked for tomorrow and the weather forecast is for gales in the Irish sea. Past trips have been in 'shopping car' so I've not paid any attention to how it's been strapped down for rough crossings.

Jacking under suspension arms is not permitted so I guess strapping on them would'nt be a good idea either and I don't want my wheels damaged.

Any thoughts?

Are you sure they will strap the car down? I have never heard of that being done before.

I have, however, had crossing cancelled due to bad weather.

They are big ol' ships, it's either safe enough to cross, 4 wheels on deck, with handbrake / in gear, or it's not safe to cross.

I am putting my Vantage on the Isle of Skye ferry next month, I am not sure it's even technically a boat

I have seen them securing cars to the deck in the past - maybe it's a Irish sea thing!! I' call Stenna Liine when they wake up at 9.

Last time I took a ferry with my Vantage I asked nicely for them to put me somewhere where it was less likely to get damaged. They were great. In the end they let me be on of the last cars on and I parked in an area with loads of space around. Held up the loading process a bit while I chatted about Astons with the loading supervisor.

Now that you mention it, I have a very vague recollection of a car being strapped down, but I think it was a westy or similar with a broken handbrake or something.

The last ferry I took was Belfast to Stranraer on Stena and that was very rough crossing. No cars were strapped down. It was so rough we had to stand off shore for about 2 hours until the waters calmed enough to go into port. In fact the only reason we were on that boat is that all the other crossing had been cancelled because of the weather.

Panic over!! Just called Stenna and I'm about 20 years out of date - they used to strap things down, but as Kris said the boats are now much bigger.

I was one of the early adopters of the Bridge and the bloody Jocks had the gaul to charge me for it !!!!!

The road from Lockness to the Kyle of Lockalsh is indeed very scenic. I remember doing it in 1980 in a Triumph Stag. The carbs flooded getting off the ferry to Skye (before the bridge)and I had to take them off and free up the needle valves. A bloody car that was!
