I'm looking at a D4, and i see a lot of people with large towbar mounted bike racks on their discos, is this because they don't want to put dirty bikes in the car? Surely the D4 is massive in the back? I normally just throw my MTB straight into my estate car and i'd like to do the same. Also what typically is the real world mpg of the latest 3.0 engine? (i do a mixed 25 mile commute with a bit of Mway (busy so slow) and a bit of B road stuff)

I have a D3 and the bike doesnt fit that easily in the back so I do use the tow bar/rack.
My 2.7 D3 gets approx 25mpg overall - more on a long run and less around town. Had it for 50K or so I guess.

I've had a D4 3.0 TDV6 for 2 and a half years. I average about 32 MPG with care (mainly 18 mile commute an A road and town) but the MPG can drop if not careful.

I do a lot of cycling mainly road, but MTB too. Put the seats down, and a bike will fit with ease with no need to remove wheels or seat posts. Rubber mat in boot and I use a picnic blanket to cover the back of the folded seats - stays reasonably clean.

Fantastic car and huge boot. You can still fit 2 bikes in the boot with back seats up if you remove the front wheel

My Mum has an 11 plate D4 HSE and has averaged around 31-32mpg over 16k miles, though the computer is a little (circa 1mpg) optimistic.

Wow amazing mpg - the 3 ltr engine must be so much improved. I live in a very hilly area and so I guess my experiences aren't representative.

My D4 averages about 25 round town and an easy 30mpg on a run. Even towing a trailer with an e36 BMW on the back it only drops to 20-21 mpg.

Easily the most accomplished and versatile car I have owned.

What sort of MPG do you get when towing? My rally car and trailer are about 1600kg all up, so should be a breaze for the Disco to pull?

You won't even notice the trailer is there in a D4! Just that the fuel gauge drops a bit faster than normal! laugh

EDIT: I think we got low 20s towing a horsebox fully loaded with hay, not sure what that weighs.
