People who use TPFT insurance tend to not care too much about their car - so they are usually more likely to have an accident on it, whereas a fully comp driver is more likely to care for his car and drive safer.

Pretty much this!

I've had it before where it's worked out 50-60 quid cheaper than 3rd Party and have been told it's for this reason.

No. I've never had a quote that was cheaper for fully comprehensive. The idea that people who insure tpft don't care about having an accident is nonsense.

Third party rates are these days usually about 85% of comp rates. All the big claims come from third party anyway, for injury.

But, on older cars with comp cover you get an age of car discount, because they will be paying less on a total loss. You don't get this discount on third party because they are not covering your own damage anyway. So on older cars the comp rate less the age of car discount can bring premium down below the third party rate.

That makes sense, thanks.

Most people who have TPFT drive cheap cars ( I know, I have one), but the claims for injuries will still be the same and cost the ins. co. the same, which ever way you are insured.

I've got a £1500 4x4 shed sitting on my drive that cost me just £200 less to insure TPFT than my Spyder did FC.
