An E60 M5 with over 200k miles on her; fair dues for such a highly strung engine...

I would disagree that the engine is highly strung. While it revs to 8000+ rpm it was designed to do so - materials, weight of components, precision of manufacture etc. Now, if we had an ordinary Fiesta engine revving there with no engineering taking the ordinary bit into account, then that would be a highly strung engine (or grenaded), whatever you prefer http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60-m5-e61-m5-tou...
The S54B32 is more "strung", yet 150k miles is not unheard of... Cheburator mk2 said:

My E36 M3 evo has done 165k and is only used and abused on track now... still goes like the day I bought it and engine is still spot on
I have to say I do love the M engines, they are better than any other manufacture IMHO
