Prior to 2004, the 996 requires annual servicing. Normally this is done on a major/minor alternating basis.
The only exception to that is for cars doing low mileages can have an "annual inspection" one year, then major the next, then "annual inspection" , then minor etc. However, there must be no more than 12,000 miles between oil changes (which are only done at minor/major services) - hence that option is only really useful for cars doing 6,000 miles or less per annum.
