Villagers in Middleton, Co Durham are fed up up with people "speeding through their village!"

So one villager created "WPC Nancy Scarecrow".

Nancy sure stopped traffic. Drivers allegedly slammed on brakes at sight of Nancy brandishing her truncheon! (This is what they said on the news bulletin )

One angry motorist knocked Nancy's block off! Sent it rolling across the village green!

Co Durham police are not amused either - impersonating a police officer - serious - innit?

Per the Police in Durham:

"If WPC Scarecrow causes an accident by distracting drivers - we will prosecute her creator!"

Scarecrows dressed up as cops .... whatever next!

Reminds me of the cardboard pc and cars they put on motorway bridges for a while

I actually think its not a bad idea to slow ppl down... i'd rather be surprised by a scarecrow than a scamera!

And dont you just love the bib reaction... she may be held responsible if she causes an accident! So will they now be taking responsibility for all the accidends caused by their cameras now, or is it still one law for them and one for us?

i think the BiB are only jealous they didnt come up with the idea first, if they had the police pr people would be proudly proclaiming what a success it was and likening the motorist that knocked her block off to captain Gatso!

Must be time for a cup of tea and a slice of cake...

I sometimes walk along verges with my high vis coat on. That makes people brake hard when they first see me. I really must get a new hobby .

I seem to recall that BiB's have put up cardboard cutouts of police cars before now - so perhaps it's not such a bad idea after all!

Update on WPC Nancy!

She has been kidnapped. Nancy was stood at he post brandishing her truncheon and a mobile camera doo-dah when car screeched to halt and two men grabbed hold of her, bundled her into the car and sped off with her!

Mrs Anderson (Nancy's Mama) tearfully recalled how her neighbour saw this happen, but failed to stop the "copnapping" and also failed to get reg number and make of car - only thing she recalls is "it was a large make" (narrows it down a bit then! )

Durham Police have so far declined to comment, and Mrs Anderson says: "Nancy was really just an entry to a scarecrow competition. But she was so realistic and she really did stop traffic!"

You just cannot make it up!
