I'm a Land Rover man, always have been. My very first car was an early 1950's Series 1 short wheel base. Then a Series 3 lightweight army drop landy with a V6. Many years have passed and my daily driver now is a modern Range Rover.

So, why am I now coveting the very latest Porsche Cayenne? I just saw a 12 plate in black and it looked terrific. Nice proportions, slightly de-911'd nose, lovely noise, nice wheels. It looked the business.

The first series Cayenne was a bit of a pig but this new one is really making me consider one. Build quality has got to be better than any LR product too, surely?

They're fking expensive though after a quick blackberry search of the classifieds. Ballbags.

I hate to annoy you but fitted with decent tyres it's actually not awful offroad either, if you can live without extreme axle articulation.

Really, really sorry.

Do they have hi-lo boxes, 3 locking diffs and decent ground clearance? If so I think I may be in trouble...

They are pretty hand off road, very good TCS systems (just like the LR, but without so many settings) , adjustable suspension and ride height and ok wheel travel. Not as good maybe, but would probably goes as far off road as easily as 99% of current RR owners are ever likely to go.

eh?

Well a Landy doesn't have 3 locking diffs anyhow. Only 1 and an optional rear one on some RRS/D3 or 4's.

This is slightly good news as I often use every ounce of the Rangie's offroad bells and whistles.

I guess the new Porsche has got such big brakes that getting sensible (18/19'') wheels on with good mixed use tyres is a no too.

Thank fk for that, I've just spent half an hour on the classifieds and now I'm 50-70k richer, sort of.

I think that was Top Gear nonsense, this Cayenne has small (relatively) wheels and off road tyres:
