Exporting to Spain
Discussion
My understanding is that the Spanish authorities take a dim view of kit cars and that the way to get a 7 registered in Spain is for it to be a factory built car.
My Supersprint was a factory built car but the V5 includes a note on the front that says "Kit built/converted - assembled from parts that may not be new".
I didn't see this on the V5 when I bought it because I flicked straight to the next page to make sure it was registered as a Caterham. Doh! etc...
Is this going to cause me problems?
Assuming that I can export it, what am I looking at having to change? Headlights, speedo and moving the foglight is about all I can come up with.

Is your car Q registered? If so then I'd suggest it isn't factory built.
If it's not Q reg it is probably more likely that the DVLA records are not correct. It won't be the first time with this type of car.
I'm sure a friend in the club took his car to Spain with him back in the 90s. Whether it was easier back then I don't know.
Cheers

It's on an H plate which also gave me confidence, but I found a mail shot letter from caterham cars in the history stating that they had a supply problem with engInes for a bit and were offering remanufactured units. It migh lt be worth me going to caterham to get a letter confirming authenticity and trying to get the dvla to amend the v5 I guess.
Do you have Spanish residencia? Whereabouts in Spain are you taking the car?
It would help if you can get a CoC from Caterham. If it's factory built they should be able to give you one.
However, if it's built from kit, they won't.
The chassis number will tell you if it's factory built or not.
Have a look here http://7faq.com/owbase/ow.asp?ChassisNumbers
Depending on where you are depends how easy it wll be to get it through the Spanish ITV (MOT) If you're in the Islands, forget it! I understand Costa del Sol, and Galicia are quite helpfull.
As long as it's not on a Q plate, which you've already stated the car isn't, it should be possible.

Thanks mickrick - decoding my chassis number suggests a 5 speed long chassis 1.7 Supersprint De-dion, which is a relief cos that's what it looks like!
My number doesn't include a K at the front which would imply it was not a kit.
And cheers for the heads up on regions, believe it or not it will be going to Galicia!! I did see there was an owner in La Coruna I think so I wonder if it might be worth using that test center.
Oh and I bought it on PH so it must be kosher!!!
Edit to say - sorry, CoC - "Certificate of Compliance" ??? I'll call them tomorrow.

Nice! The roads in Galicia are great!
My Wife is from a small village near Mazaricos, so we often drive into Muros.
The coast road from Muros to Cap Finistere is a lovely wide black sticky undulating ribbon.
Also the road from Muros back up the mountain, I think it's the AC400 is incredible!
I won't make it this summer though due to work comitments.
Anyway, I digress, shame about the CoC, but I suppose they'll only give them on the later eu compliant cars now I think about it.
But I can't see why they shouldn't give you a Spanish plate on it. Keep insisting it's a clasico!
La Coruna has to be easier than the Islands. All round nice people up there.
Good luck with it, and keep us informed on progress?

It will be going to live with my stepfather just up the coast from Finistere, he lives near Vicedo at the base of the Bares point. The road from there up in to the hills is spectacular, and traffic free but the odd goat can keep you on your toes! Looking forward to trying it out in something other than the family bus.
We'll have a go at importing it and see what happens, and I'll post our findings.

Well, someone in Alicante, knows someone! Just found this website http://lotus-7.net/
and some of the stuff they say is possible to register, I would have thought impossible!

Is it me, or does it all seem a bit dodgey?
