Hi all,
Just switched from my 91 S3 to a 94 Chim
. Loved the S and had few problems with it but wanted more practicality as an everyday driver and of course, power!
It's starmist blue 24k with FSH.TVR till a few years ago and specialist since. Had it checked out by the guy I bought the S from -Philip Reygate ( www.rhinomotorsport.co. ) Highly reccomended. Had a thorough inspection and test and apart from afew minor niggles seems to be in excellent order.
It's had the cams, followers and timing gear converted to HC spec together s/steel sports exhaust and tuned induction plenem, enlarged inlet trumpets and a Mark Adams Tornado Chip. Claimed 285bhp but I supect this is rather optimistic to say the least. Still, it does go like stink! Had a Merc AMG all over my rear bumper yesterday at a really inappropriate place to open up so I gently followed the traffic until we came to a dual carraigeway and the traffic was rather thin. He was far too close so I changed to third then fourth with the lead boots and quite soon he was left well over a hundred yards back
. He looked very disgruntled when he passed me later. Maybe he wasn't quite aware of what he was taking on. Anyway all rather childish but I did chuckle to myself.
I daresay as time goes by I'll need some advice about fixing things so I'll be grateful to anyone with info as and when it's required.
I'm down in Brighton so if anyone knows of any local meets etc I'd be glad to come along.

welcome! Your 285bhp is certainly very optimistic--a standard 4L Chim is claimed at 240bhp and in fact produces about 160 at the wheels so you might,just might be getting about 180 at the wheels--OK but I assure you that any self-respecting Subaru with a good driver will leave you standing on a twisty road. You have a nice sporty family car---if you want power get a 500 or better a Cerbie or Tuscan.

one more point---you have not had a conversion to HC unless you have a complete new head with large valves so you have a new cam and whatever else--probably an induction kit--gives you about +10bhp to 20bhp realistically--how much did it cost you? The old guide of £100 per 1bhp is pretty accurate---if you want more power get yourself more ccs is basic.

I owned an Impreza Turbo a couple of years ago. Good cars and I would concur that on windy roads it did handle better. The standard turbo's do tend to lose the grunt when they get to around a ton (probably due to a combination of low gearing and rather less power).Problem was that despite the superb engineering it still looked like a Jap tin top escort with body kit. Not quite in the same league as the Chim's sublime looks!
I agree that the most direct route for more bhp is more cc's which is why I went from a 2.9L to a 4 litre. My point is not that it's anything like the most powerful example of a Chim but that according to the expert who drove and tested the car for me, performance wise he thought it was significantly quicker than a standard 4l but not as quick as a 4.5l. All rather academic really. The car is lovely to drive and looks the buisness.

OK OK--just pointing out the realities of life. What have you actually got Mr Pook (can I call you Spooky?)? You have got a car with a lot of CHARISMA..If you treat it properly keep up with EVERYTHING and don't dump it on the street you may have a classic one day. I assume that it's your second car---if not it will inexoriably deteriorate and, unless you are very very wealthy, you will not be able to keep it in pristine condition. You seem to yearn for POWER--strongly suggest that you sell at a profit and go for MUCH MUCH MORE bhp.

Thankyou for your 'Sage' Like wisdom. Or should I say stating the bleedin obvious.
I mentioned power when I spoke about wanting more than my S3 could provide. It's not like my outlook on life and to be more prcise motoring is the constant quest for the ultimatly powerful car like it's some sort of Holy Grail or something. Well at least not to me.
Not sure what you meant by 'family car' as there are only two seats. I suppose I might be a single parent one day but I'd probably prefer not to be.
Well anyway.. apologies for the rant and I would reiterate that any helpful or useful comments are allways most wellcome.

well I don't want to offend you but you started it all. IMHO anybody who constantly thrashes a classic sports car is a prat. They are basically for showing off not to put too fine a point on it--head turners in other words and why not. Boy racer "gizmos" are for throwing around--horrible little heaps that sound like scrap being emptied into a tip. Good luck Spooky! Enjoy your car!
