Wideband reading at idle?
Discussion
I have just swapped injectors to a set of serviced vectra ones for various upgrade reasons!
I have set the fuel pressure to give a reading of about 13 under hard acceleration up hill, (temporary till it goes on a RR).
At idle the wideband gauge reads 11.
what should this read and can I tweak it using the adjustment on the standard AFM, (running Lucas jobby still!).

Just started the car to put it in t'garage and it's running mega rich.
grey smoke from the rear, struggleing to run on all cylinders and the wideband gauge is oscillating inbetween 10-11!
When I first started the car after fitting the new injectors it was running slightly reduced pressure and therefor was running leaner at idle.
When I tweaked the pressure to run at 13 at full beans and it was hot, it was idleing OK at 11.
I think, now it's cold, the ECU is putting in too rich a mixture.
Can this be "adjusted" or is this mod a no go on my car?

Its because your cold fuelling is additive to your already too rich an idle
your CO screw at least can be tweeked to adjust your idle mix as your running the non-cat map, adjust to said screw to get around 13/14 AFR @ idle to make engine run smoothest
bigish cams don't like to run lean on idle and your motor will show its disapproval as you wean off the fuel

Vectra FI's Alex are high impedance, Peter the car should run as rich as *uck when the AFM is unplugged
hopefully Blitz/Mark should be along soon as your going into territory I have never ventured or experimented with the stock Hotwire ECU made even harder as I don't have the car sitting in front of me
have you checked the security and connections of the AFM plug i.e no corrosion etc?

I did warn you not to feck with it
You need a ma chip or new Ecu
+ 1 Wot he saidYou need a ma chip or new Ecu
Increasing the fuel pressure changes the battery voltage corrections required for the injector & requires a number of tweaks to the fuel map not least the cranking tables.
So it's not just a simple case of winding up the pressure, there will be consequences.
Consequences you are currently experiencing Peter.
Don't expect to see gains from just changing to those Vectra injectors you really need to move away from the 14CUX ECU or pay Mark Adams for his services.
Once you move to an ECU you can talk to yourself, you will for the very first time have true control over the fuelling and ignition system.
I have Vectra injectors & they work well, the Lucas disc type injectors have an impedance of 16.2 ohms & the Vectra ones 15.3 ohms, in practice the difference of 1 ohm is so small as to be considered irrelevant.
But I also have have a Tornado chip and the car was setup on the rollers by Mark Adams himself.
I's just a humble 4.0 litre still running labda control so after some logIcal debate with Mark it was agreed there was no requirement to increase the fuel pressure on my application.
On a more developed engine like yours & running these 250cc injectors, there is likely to be gains if you move from 2.5 to 3.0 bar but like I say it's going to need other fuelling adjustments.
As such an after market ECU is a complete no brainer, I plan just that move in the very near future, I've finally had to admit to myself what I knew deep down all along.
"A user configurable after market ECU is like unlocking the door to developing & improving my car"
It probably in all honesty should have been the first thing I did to to the car, I should have realised from the outset that configurable ECU is the platform to build on.
There's nothing wrong with the Lucas 14CUX system, the associated AFM is actually a very sophisticated sensor that can accurately calculate air mass (which is just what you need to know).
The problem is that you can't effectively talk to the 14CUX & make adjustments as you wish, oh and the distributor is a joke when compared with a system that allows ignition control based on a number of inputs & variables.
Altering the advance & retard on linear centrifugal force with only a whif of vacuum to compensate for load is archaic.
Out with the old, in with the new.
Given that those injectors are a *HIGHER* flowrate than the standard injectors then surely *UPPING* the fuel pressure is going to make them run even richer than they would do already...
Is it worth backing the fuel pressure down a bit from standard if you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator?

The problem with a very rich idle was as pointed out and a talk with Simon is that I foolishly started the engine with the AFM disconnected! Instant limp mode....
I vote as it's fathers day tomorrow, I get a lie in, reset the ECU and have another go, what's to loose!
You mighr wake up tomorrow with a box full of Megasquirt goodies .I vote as it's fathers day tomorrow, I get a lie in, reset the ECU and have another go, what's to loose!
