Are chocolates, chips, crisps, salt & vinegar snack a jack and biscuits (custard creams, bourbons) foods that a 5 month old should be eating?

We recently visited relatives and were surprised to see them feeding their 5 month old these foods eek They did take him off milk at about 2-3 months old so have fed him solids since then.... might explain why he is 20lbs at 5 months old!

I wouldn't feed my son these items even at a year old, but wondered whether I was been over cautious hehe

Thankfully the mother is not related to me (neither is the father yet, my family tree is clean hehe ), however she's a nursery nurse and thinks she knows everything about babies banghead I think the issue is that she has always worked with older children (3years+ ) and so is treating her kid in the same way frown

Jesus the decline of society!

Relatives or not, shoot them. Save humanity. Feel good at your higher moral grounding.

This is something people argue over but the current thinking in the UK is not to start babies on solids until they're 6mths old.

ETA, I just mentioned 20lbs at 5mths to my missus and she was aghast! Our grandaughter is 10mths old this weekend, she's a chunky lass, equal biggest amongst her similar age NCT group, and she's just nudging 20lbs.

She should be taking the baby to be weighed now and again, and it would be off the scale on the weight charts.

Babies should take breast milk or formula until at least 6 months, longer the better on these two and at one year of age swap onto full strength cows milk

Most of those things are high in salt
The calories far outweigh the protein

It shows a total disregard for the needs of an infant. Let alone a decent diet for an adult.

I don't think I'd give kids that rubbish till they were talking and then only in small moderation.

And I bet they say that the baby won't eat anything else or doesn't like healthy foods!

1. The baby should not be taken off milk that early as it contains all the nutrients required to aid correct development.

2. I am suprised the baby has not choked yet.

I am calling bullst on this because a baby of 2-3 months would not have the sufficient tongue reflex or the ability to swallow anything that solid without severely risking choking.

I would also be surprised that the baby is gaining weight on that diet. Protein in the milk is what makes babies grow.

If this true (and I doubt it) then I would be calling social services.

Apologies, I had wanted to write "taken of milk as the one food source", (as in weaned off, I'm knackered and communicating poorly!) so he is fed milk at lunch as well as the solids listed above with oats at breakfast.

Is there a website offering advice on what/ how much you should and should not feed a child? If I confront them directly she'll go on about her phd in nursery nursing and how what she doesn't know about babies isn't worth knowing, but an informational website will hopefully do the trick, especially if I pass it onto the grandparents. I have looked but might be using the wrong search terms.

They love him to bits, but the mother is unbelievably thick and thinks she knows everything so just needs some proper direction, and 'discovering' the info herself is probably the best course of action as it is something she did then rather than instructed to do.

You can guarantee the kid will be eating the same stuff for the next 30 years or more, so why not start early? Is he on pizza and MacDo yet??

That makes more sense, he wouldn't be able to process solids at that age.

My other half pointed me towards this:
http://www.babycentre.co.uk/baby/startingsolids/?i...

ETA: There's almost the same list on their page about salt as you posted!

"Don't give your baby processed foods that are high in salt, such as:

child and adult ready meals
pies
biscuits
crackers
soups
gravies
sauces
pizza
bacon
crisps"

That's of some concern on several levels if she works in a nursery.

Thanks, that site should be helpful, especially as it specifies most of the solids she is using as bad ideas. I'll forward it on and hope it knocks some common sense into her!
