Having moved out of a city centre, gained a driveway, gone over 27 my insurance has finally dropped to a resonable price on a hot hatch. The only problem is I can not pick a car, I find one I like one week but read/hear something that puts me off the next.

I'm currently in a standard Ibiza FR Tdi (130 bhp), its been a solid car but its getting high on miles and I want something faster...

I've a budget of 6k, am looking for a post 2004 motor with lowish (50k max) miles that I can chuck a few more go faster £££'s at. The list of potentials is long; Clio 182 Cup, Megane 225, Clio 197, Civic type R & RX8 to name a few.

Can anyone make a recommendation?????

Dont forget your current steed probably has over 200lbs/ft so things like the Clio may even seem slower until you're at 8/10s

The Clio 197 is an outstanding car, we had one for 3 years and absolutely loved it smile

So much to choose from! I keep reading bad things about the RX8 - needs looking after.

The clio is ok, driven a mates 182 a few times but the power is only there at the top end, hard to get used to from what I have now. Also just found out in here that the Civic has a Mugen chip out there that kicks the V-Tec in early & includes launch control. Can't find a great deal that gives good gains on the Clio.

Have looked at a VRS but want to get out of the VW/Audi group, the Ibiza has been rock solid but inside is recycled from the other groups.

If you need to be practical in terms of running costs and reliability and good build quality, hell, even 3 seatbelts in the back, plus a Mountune option, the Fiesta ST has to be worth a good look.

Mini Cooper S? You can pick one up on an 05/55 plate for that budget and a reduced pulley on the charger will increase the power quite significantly.

Not so much running costs but boot, room for the mrs, dogs trips to IKEA. Can you tune the Fiesta much more than 20 for a reasonable price? Can't say I know a great deal about them.

Cheers everyone else, will go have a look at a couple of type R's next weekend. See if I can find one in budget thats low milage!
