Surprising fuel economy figures...
Discussion
I know this is Pistonheads and not wanting to go all "What Car?" on you but been driving my Honda Integra R and over the past couple of days and it has averaged 39 mpg! I knew it was not bad on fuel but given it was not some economy run but a bit of mixed driving (admitedly quite a bit of motorway) and driving according to the conditions.
Pleasantly suprised that a 13 year old car tuned for 9k revs with very short gearing managed this. Any other economy tales? The good and even better, the bad...

We've just got back from 6 days in Switzerland. Just hired a bog standard petrol Focus, but got a Golf TDi instead. Never driven one before - comfortable, quiet and over 1406km we got 56mpg and that was fully loaded with 5 adults at all times, sometimes full luggage and lots of mountain passes. Very impressed with that economy!

I always knew the RX-8 was going to be utterly pathetic in terms of economy. But nothing would prepare me for the 12mpg I averaged in winter 2010. That's 12 mpg in fairly regular traffic from a "1.3" engine producing 228bhp and zero torque. Cheers Mazda.
That's an incredible 1mpg improvement on my old man's 500bhp, V8, supercharged, 3 tonne Mercedes G wagen

Same winter, another Mazda engine managed 14mpg. That was a 1.8 MZR in my Mondeo. 125hp and zero torque.
Fail.I've had 35mpg on a fairly steady 70-80 cruise from my supercharged Mustang with 462hp. Even on a track day, it was 9mpg.
(These are of course unverified and "according to the car's computer" because as anyone who has tried filling a Mustang tank will tell you, it's pretty much impossible).

I am genuinely amazed by the fuel economy of my E46 328i. On a long run at the speed limits (60 - 70 mpg) it will easily do over 40 mpg, the record being 43.2 I think.
Dad's Audi A4 3.0 TDI Quattro is the other highlight - on the same journey it will do 54 mpg on Shell V Power diesel.
Of course, when you take both of these cars near a town or put the boot down these figures take a bit of a hammering

Your driving it wrong (in traffic) I always red line mine drive like I stole it and get 19-21mpg.I'm sort of surprised by my Legacy estate 2.5, AWD , auto I drive about 400-500 miles a week and and starting to get 35 mpg. It's not bad is it?
BTW these are real world figures, not trip computer.

Went to the Scottish highlands last week in TD4 freelander. Other half normally gets low 30s commuting to Brum. I get mid 30s general M'way cruising. Round Inverness/Skye way, 4 up, legal cruising, 43/45. Very surprised. Lovely empty roads though, ideal for a proper motoring tour, as seen by a convoy of 8 German plated Morgans, a couple of MGA s, and a few other tasty old timers.
