Hi Guys,

I drive a hybrid in the week and have been thinking about buying a 'fast' weekend car. I have a budget of a £1,000 and it doesn't matter about insurance or maintenance because I will only take her out at the odd weekend. What car could people recommend?

Cheers,

James

Your not going to get anything that fast for a grand. Something nippy along the lines of a 1.7 puma or mx5 would imo be your best bet.

I think the fashionable answer is an E36 328i, with enough money left over for an M50 manifold to give it circa 210bhp.

Low budget, fast weekend toy... Gotta halve the number of wheels! For 1k you can get close to Ferrari 360 performance.

MR2 MK2, made up to 170bhp. Easy to remove weight from it to make it a bit faster.

You can get an old 600 sports for that...maybe even a thunderace or something similar if you stretch the budget a bit read

You can get a tatty looking blade for that if you bid hard.

You could get a VVC MGF for that money, 143bhp, 0-60 in 7 seconds, top speed 135ish, roof comes down.

I think their great. Leave most cars for dead and an MX-5 wouldn't have a chance in a straight line.

I don't belive those figures at all, my car has lower drag, lower weight, higher Bhp, maringally less torque, very simillar gearing and does a 7.8 0-60.

+1

After picking up an £800 shed I totally agree these are performance bargains. Have a good look, choose a quirky colour, non mtech model and you can find good examples with no rust and peachy tight engines. You can upgrade them later with various spec OM wheels and OM mtech bumpers and skirts as you wish. As mentioned, fit the bigger manifold, change the diff for a higher ratio and you have a car that is plenty fast on the road, is rear wheel drive, easy to drive fast and can return decent mpg when you need it too.

Plus parts are cheap to fix anything as they made so many.

lol.. smile

Seriously, my F is very quick and totally standard. It will hit 60 in around 7 seconds. It rev's to over 7000rpm.

You should try driving one. I had no idea how quick they were before we bought it. You'd be very surprised how many people who hog the outside lane in their German repmobiles try to to outdrag it and end up very embarrassed.

You can do this with the roof down wearing a pink shirt too

Nate, that little car will leave both of your cars standing still. I think I'd be the one laughing....

Occasionally, turbo's do come up cheap if you are feeling lucky and want to take a chance :P

That comment reeks of someone who'd never even sat in an F, let alone driven one rolleyes

MGF?

Horrible seating position, stink of petrol, headgaskets blowing.

WHY in god's name would you want one.

Seriously, I would rather have this

Than an MGF

The original F vvc was rated at 0-60mph in 7.0 sec. However you have to get a perfect launch which is near impossible as you have enough power and grip to spin the stock clutch (rather than the wheels). I think Rover later revised the figure to 7.5 seconds.

Drag would have almost no bearing on a 0-60mph sprint.
