Do Private Number Plates Add to Previous Owners on V5?
Discussion
I've been scratching my head on this one and would appreciate some help before I challenge the DVLA. I believe I am the 9th owner of my 22 year old car, i have all the history to prove this, however it says 14 previous owners on the v5 log book. I have All mots, invoices etc to show the car has had 6 private plate changes through its life....is this why the previous owners is artificially high by 6? If so can I challenge it and get it changed? Dave
Most definitely NOT (well for the last 25 yrs anyway)
Makes me laugh the amount of times this excuse gets trotted out.
On specialised / prestige cars there can often be flipping between business's / partners etc which can quickly rack up owners on paper
Ie bought in company name, then private name, then wife's name and before you know it, it's a 3 owner car
Sports cars can easily rack up big number of owners as they are bought on whim and sold on a whim

Just to get back to you on this one, I received the requested history information from DVLA on my car today. The previous private number plates definitely do not add to previous owners.
It is very interesting though to read, and as suggested, businesses, partners etc have all added to the owners several times. For £5 well worth it if you have afew previous owners on the V5 youd like to know more about!

It certainly used to be the case that a reg change often did result in a change of keeper, it was a common DVLA cock up for many years. IT appears not be the case the now but for many cars 10+ & older it certainly might be.
As mentioned earlier, not been happening for the last 25 yearsSome dealers change the registered keeper when transferring a plate from a part exchange to a car they are selling to ensure that the new v5 goes to them for the car they now own. Happened with one of mine, didn't receive a disposal letter from DVLA and when I called to enquire my details no longer matched the car.
