Please help me pick a car.
Discussion
Hello all,
This is my first post on the forum so apologies if I am asking a boring question.
I don't know a lot about cars but heard about this forum and thought you may be able to help.
I am looking to spend at the most £4000 pounds on a new car but am confused as to what I should get.
My requirements are
1. Cruise control.
2. At least 50 mpg combined - the more the better obviously.
3. Some performance - prefer something which can get to 60mph in under 10 seconds.
4. Reliable build quality.
5. Decent safety rating.
6. Does not need to be spacious in the back.
So far I have been considering a Fabia VRS, the Octavia being too fuel thirsty, Audi A3s seem pretty damn expensive and maybe out of my budget as do Golfs.
What else should I be considering? Cruise control is probably going to limit my choice a lot.
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks for the welcomes!
My annual mileage is a difficult question because my circumstances are quite uncertain at the moment.
It is certainly going to be towards the low end because I pretty much live where I work.
I would think less than 10,000 miles per year.
Other cars I am looking into are a BMW 3 series or Mercedes C class.

With that sort of mileage, you may as well go for a petrol car - less to go wrong and nicer to drive. Given you are thinking about a C-Class and 3 series, I take it comfort takes priority over out and out driving ability.
So assuming it's a saloon rather than a hatch (a la Fabia VRs) that you want, also consider a Jag X-Type. These are very good value for money compared to the two German cars, and very nicely equipped. Another interesting alternative could be a Volvo S60 T5 or Saab 93 HOT Aero, both of which will be nippy and comfortable.
The BMW 3 series is a great car, but be aware that all the six cylinder models from 320i - 330i use about the same amount of fuel, so you may as well get the more powerful engine.
With regard to the Merc C-class, for your budget you will probably only get a early to mid 2000 model year car, and these were not build during Mercedes' finest hour, so if you want one of these do plenty of research as some cars were problematic with regard to rust and electrics (post 2005 cars are vastly improved however).
If you want a hatch back, check out the Fabia's petrol powered cousin (Seat Ibiza Cupra or Fr). These tend to be a bit cheaper than the Skoda as well (though I'm not sure if those have cruise control).
