Can anyone please offer some insight into a situation a friend of mine has found herself in?

She has a 2007 Saab 93 with about 70k miles on the clock. At the last service, about six months ago she was advised the front pads would need doing before the next service. It had an MOT a few weeks ago and they advised the pads were at the limit.

She has taken it to a well known chain who have service centres attached to their larger retail stores. They said it needed discs as well as pads because they were at the limit. I was slightly suspicious at this point and asked her to get the thickness from them. They have come back with 25mm, I think the spec for her car is 26mm. It is an Aero if anyone has further info.

They have now said it needs a caliper. I asked her if they said why and she has come back with they can't get it back in. I phoned them directly as I was getting very suspicious. I've heard too many stories of this chain selling parts that were not needed. The person I spoke to said the piston would come out but not go back in again. That sounded very odd to me so I asked them to put it all back as it was and said we would collect the car from them. He said they could not because they have already thrown out the old discs and pads, the car was taken in on Saturday morning but they did not have a caliper in stock.

Am I right to be so suspicious? Has anyone ever heard of a caliper where the piston would go out but not in again? Where does she stand?

Thanks

Ian

Go down there and ask to see the seized piston caliper.

I'd be phoning around to get prices on cost of a low loader and taking it elsewhere.

I phoned them again earlier and said I wanted to see the old caliper when we collected the car. They agreed.

A few minutes ago they called to say the car was ready. Imagine my surprise at the news that they had been able to free the old caliper and a new one was not needed rolleyes

Would they have tried had I not wanted to see the old one - I doubt it. Will she be taking the car there ever again - no.

I've never gone to a garage and been told I only needed pads doing, they ALWAYS say discs.

I told them to shove it and just pay a mechanic mate of mine to do em (I can't do em myself frown, will learn eventually though biggrin)

I just got something to measure disc thickness, and obvously pads are pretty easy to see.
