Are Jeep Grand Cherokee's a complete distaster?
Discussion
No idea why, but these have just pinged onto my radar.

Almost tempted to chop in the Outback for one. Any good? Waste of space? I know they'll be cheap and plasticky, but thing they've got bit of charm too.
Someone bring me to my senses. Please.

Jeeps are great vehicles. Interiors are fine too IMO. My Cherokee XJ I've just sold had a nicer interior than a same year Range Rover/Disco.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

Don't know much about the Merc engine, but the rest of the vehicle should be pretty sound and solid.

That's quite expensive for a 6 yr old car IMO
This one's better.http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3962597.htm

Higher mileage and a private sale. The £1200 difference is worth it for some comeback IMO.I looked into them last year and I don't recall hearing of any major issues. They're good to drive (considering...) and pretty quick (considering), the big issue from my POV was the small boot compared to the competition.
Not sure about the newer models but the old ones are a bit dodgy in a crash to say the least. 15 people in the US have died in fires !!

I ran one for 9 months on a 'too good to ignore' lease deal in 2006, same model as mentioned in the advert.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

Plus points were grunty diesel engine, went quite quick and it had loads of equipment including great sat nav, decent stereo and very comfy heated leather memory seats.
On the downside it gave pretty woeful fuel consumption (low 20's), it had awful quality plastics (especially around the instrument binnacle) and worst of all was that it really was a reverse tardis - there was not a lot of space in the back and the boot was pretty shallow and useless.

Avoid,
The worst 4x4 by a long shot.
Land Rover (Range Rover) Toyota, Etc are loads better, more reliable and cheaper to run
Fair enough. When LR, Toyota etc start stcking in a 5.7 Hemi V8 I'll know what to chop mine in for. The worst 4x4 by a long shot.

I'd agree on running costs, but only re fuel - at 17mpg it isn't great, but it's still the most economical of my cars. Personally, the GC was top of my list precicely because it wasn't a Range Rover. IMHO they're one of the few 'honest' 4x4s with a solid build, a big V8 and no gimmicy stuff.
Mine seems pretty capable though, and although I've only had it for a few months my wife ran one for 8 years and 140,000 miles and it was rock solid and never put a foot wrong. Not sure I'd touch a diesel one though...then again I wouldn't touch a diesel anything-else again either.
Edited - and if we must link to ads, then this is more the type of thing I'd be looking at http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3800063.htm

Decent cars, I've owned a few. Excellent off road ability. Very comfortable, proper Merc twin turbo diesel with good poke albeit pretty grim fuel consumption. 25mpg is the best you can realistically expect. Comfortable inside, usually well specced. Not geat on interior space.
eta my Dad's got a modern Landcruiser and the Grand Cherokee beats in hands down in terms of comfort and road manners.

I think I'd keep the Outback! Especially as you seem to have the 3.0 version.
Depends what they want and what they are after though. If you want to do some proper off roading, then an Outback isn't really the ideal tool, although capable for just getting up/down farm tracks.
If they are wanting a higher seating position, then again the Outback isn't ideal.
If they are wanting road performance I'd say the Outback and Jeep are neither ideal.

Sorry 300, the OP was surely asking for what the Jeep was like, not a critique in to how the car they own is incorrect for their needs?
I've got one, a 1998. It's horrid. The steering is horrid, the suspension is horrid. The engine (petrol) is nice and the gearbox is smooth and the brakes are OK, but I regularly drive boats that steer more accurately and predictably.
It's not a 'first time in a 4x4 shock' either - I've previously owned or had the extended use of Shoguns x2, Landrover, and an ML. I can say that the Jeep is by far the worst. If it burst into flames right now, I'd phone my insurance company first, and the Fire Brigade second. And probably not until after I'd made a cup of tea.
