can any resident experts help me out? my girlfriend wants to fit a high level rear brake light in her rear spoiler, but it occurred to me that there might be some kind of legislation governing max allowable height. is that the case? or, given that shes still got the standard brake lights of course, does it matter at all where she sticks it?
TIA

Off the top of my head...1200mm sounds familiar...(I will check for certain if you like)

Besides, how bloody high does she want it?

Is there a max height for an additional brake light?

They aren't needed on vehicles by law,

Some of the current light commercial vehicles have them in the top of the doors (renault/vauxhall) and the RAC's break down vehicles have additional stop lights incorporated within their light bars.

both of which are over 6ft from the ground.

Now, i've heard of a minimum distance from the floor.

sc, would you be able to confirm? nh makes a good point and ive also seen roof spoilers etc with brake lights in. does the 1.2m refer to the maximum height for standard fitment or all brake lights?
thanks for your help

Requirements in relation to Stop Lamps are contained in Schedule 12 RV (Lighting) Regs 1989.

For a motor car first used after 1.1.71:

Vertically:

Maximum height above ground 1500mm or, if the structure of the vehicle makes it impracticable, 2,100mm (which I presume caters for the High level optional).

Minimum height: 350mm

Optional lamps must comply with mandatory requirements and:

in the case of a stop lamp fitted to a motor vehicle not being a motor bicycle, first used on or after 1st April 1991 either centrally or in such a manner as to project light through the rear window the intensity of the light emitted to the rear of the vehicle shall be not less than 20 candelas and not more than 60 candelas when measured from directly behind the centre of the lamp in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.

superb - cheers for the help guys - ill let her know what the deal is.
Ghost - re the reason - her car is very low and hence she has to slow to a crawl to overcome the 'traffic calming measures' that litter her neighbourhood. she was hoping a hi level light might make following drivers think a little. shes already had a couple of close calls, its not like shes a late braker, just that people behind seem often to be on autopilot and dont think. shes thinking that a hi level light might reinforce the point. theyre only a few quid so i thought why not? if it saves her a rear bumper could be an idea.
i would add also that shes a 'handbrake on and into neutral when stopped' driver so there shouldnt be a problem with inconsiderate dazzle!
thanks again for the info.

I fitted a LED brake light to my MG and i have never regretted it. The usual lights were never brilliant (despite me redoing the electrics etc and i used to hate having stop on main roads eg level crossings etc where cars would come up behind me at max speed - because invariably cars would not catch my poor output lights and nearly back end the car!

I swear some people only notice the middle light anyway!

I have never had a near miss when it comes to those same scenarios since fitting and so consider it one of the best after market things you can fit!

I did the opposite to adding a brake light. The light in the spoiler is now the fog lamp! Martin.
