Slack knob

Changing gear today and noticed my gear knob has come loose. The leather was fixed well to the knob base. I've since undone the leather which didn't look glued on and tried my best to tighten things up.

I can't get it properly aligned nor the leather fixed securely again.

Is everything to do with this car a collosal pain in the a**e to fix!

The gaiter is fixed below the gearknob from inside, so youhave to lift up the centre panel untill the gater is inside out, then fit the gater to the bottom of the knob with wire or small tye wrap then re install the centre panel. if tou have the centre panel still bolted down then it is deffo a PITA.

When you say gaiter you mean the leather part yeah?

What aligns the top the gear knob or is it brute force?

Pretty sure the Nob just screws on , what nob is it ??

Big shinny round knob with 6 forward gears and 1 reverse ;-)

It does just screw on but it doesn't want to screw past a certain point. Or at least not with my fairy hands.

Don't want to put too much pressure on it in case I'm affecting the now working linkage system !

It has a locking nut, when it came loose it has turned slightly and will stop it from realigning, you need to take off the tunnel cover and turn the locking nut.

Removing the tunnel cover is a PITA, well it was on my 3R anyway, had to undo the nuts from inside the tunnel, but access was made by the louvre vents, just got to cut a few cable ties and you can just squeeze your arm through.

I made mine removable for this reason, i made a U shaped bracket that hugs the tunnel and then the knee pads attach to this in turn..the handbrake area is secured with velcro..

Thanks R0162. This gear linkage upgrade has been the biggest PITA I've had - everything has worked its way loose over time and I've had a melted linkage cable!

Ok, so I now need to find someone with a ramp to get underneath to undo some nuts, then from the top remove the tunnel cover and retighten the locking nut. Whilst at it then put the gaiter back on in some clever way

What's the alternative? Will it work it's way loose to the point of dangerous?

The new gear lever is a lot different from the std setup , the gear lever shaft is threaded on the end and there is a lock nut to lock the nob in place , it should be just under the gater , you cannot losen the linkage by twisting the nob .
Craig if you feel around the bottom of the nob can you feel the nut through the gater ???

Cheers for your help Simon & Dave(Jetstream). Now I understand. The M400 linkage knob does not have a nut arrangement to help locate it. Instead the knob is hand threaded to locate into the correct place. Mines for whatever reason is now (was ok before) way off the mark.

ah it sounds like you have something different to mine, but still if you make the tunnel cover removable, it will give easy access..
