Is there anything else equivalent?

Requirements:

AWD or 4WD essential.
(Small) estate preferred but could settle for the right saloon.
<£4k.
Official UK model!

Old S4?

I'd rather have the Impreza, though.

I looked and looked and posted here on a few occasions but went back to a Scooby wagon....

Until, I bought this. Not 4WD, it is small, fun and very frugal though. Great car

AWD/4WD for that budget just about limits you to a Suburu or a Honda HR-V.

Does it have to be 4WD as the Alfa Sportwagon would get my vote everytime

Nissan stagea:

Comes in either 2.5 single turbo or 2.6 twin turbo.

Cavanous space, incredible performance, 4wd.

Why UK model only? I have a JDM import Legacy Twin Turbo estate - It is all the car I will ever need! (Really, and I mean really surprised at the economy, I see north of 25/26mpg with mixed driving and not exactly steady accellaration!)

Spacious, fast, stable cavernous boot, but feels smaller when driving - It is an Impreza underneath...

Depends on why you don't want the Impreza really!

If economy isn't a problem then S2 Avant or S4 Avant would be a good shout. Plenty of grunt and lots of load lugging capacity coupled with a cracking 4WD system, more expensive to run than the Impreza though.

If you want something cheaper to run then the Mk1 Octavia 4x4 would be a good shout - it's essentially an A4 underneath but tends to be cheaper and the 1.8T engine is a peach that is cheap to run with plenty of tuning potential and is very much a proven platform.

If I was looking for a 4WD wagon though I'd still be buying the Impreza (unless I was doing mega miles)

Sometimes the obvious choice is the right choice. What is it that you are looking for in an alternative?

Isn't the Octavia more of a Golf in drag? Transverse engine, haldex system?
Sorry.. I wasn't overly clear, it's built off the A4 platform not the A4 car - was used for the Mk1 A3, Mk4 Golf, Mk 1 Leon, Mk1 Octavia etc and yes it's Haldex (*spit*) but if you aren't needing hardcore 4x4 goodness then it should do the job.

Groovy, that's what I though, except I didn't know that was the platform's designation
Yeah it's my error I just completly failed to type the word "platform" which made my post say something completely different as a result! hehe

RB26 versions are like hens teeth and may not have even been an official Nissan model (Autech conversion IIRC), they also did 2.0 and 2.5 NA versions in rwd and 4wd. Practically impossible to find a manual.

They're huge cars and have a thirst to match, dad had a 2.5 NA VVT (~210bhp) 4wd one which made my twin turbo Legacy look particularly economical.
