Hi guys,

I've recently split up with my fiancee about 2 months ago whilst we were buying a house and planning a family, so as you can imagine I've gone off the rails a bit. Since this has happened I've started using powder to get me through (mainly to stay awake because I have a fantastic job and because I've lost all my belongings the only thing I have to do is go out drinking and doing both isn't easy without it) the thing that worries me is that I'm using more and more every day. I'm not a very open person when it comes to my feelings and it makes it easier posting to people who don't know me, was just wandering at what point does recreational use become addicted?

Sorry your relationship ended.

Whatever you do the best advice I can give is the advice you will know yourself which is to stop this as soon as possible.

You need friends around you to help you through.

There will always be dark times in life and you need to learn how to cope without 'help' as soon as possible.

You can get addicted very easily. Anything that helps you get through the day will do this to you.

It's not nice watching people close who are going through/doing similar things.

Ask for help whenever you can from friends and family or your doctor even. Just don't self medicate in the way you are doing as its not recreational

This is the wrong website to discuss anything serious. It'll be only a few posts before you get total wkers screaming abuse at you and calling you a retard, probably with something benefits related being thrown in for no reason.

I'd recommend a different forum for actual productive advice.

He said he had a great job and was buying a house, and he's engaged in a PH approved pass time. Who could fault that? If anything he'll get people asking him for advice.

You feckless benefits junkie.

OP
IMO dependency is when you feel that you need it to cope, rather than just taking it for fun. I've never had it with powder but had the odd episodes of doing this with alcohol. Try breaking your normal routine, get away for a weekend and put yourself out of the way of the circumstances which normally lead to you doing this.

Can you take a week off these habits? If not, you're addicted.

Go and see your GP, talk it through with them and take the help they offer.

Good luck.

What are we talking about here? Cocaine?

You want go give that up straight away. No good will come of it. Seriously. If you really want to know where the line is then you need to talk to recovering addicts, get to a meeting.

I have no direct experience to be able to offer you any kind of advice but I do have one commetn. It seems to me that the point in time when you start worrying or asking questions about your "habit" is the point at which you realise you are likely losing control of the habit and moving towards addiction. The fact that you post your question on an open forum suggests to me that you've reached that point already - you are concerned enough to be starting to check others' behaviour to see if you increasing usage still counts as normal. In other words, you know yourself that it's getting to be more than you wanted and you should reduce or stop.

I know it seems to be helping you right now but I assure you it wont in the long run.
I watched a good friend literally throw everything away over the course of just a few months doing this - it took him about 15 years to get himself on the straight and narrow again.

Ideally stop both the drinking and snorting ASAP and get yourself down the gym / for a run etc - any kind of exercise instead.

If you cant stop both at once then stop the coke for a start and then work on the boozing.

Please take you own advice and stop crying like a little girl on every fecking thread.

As for the OP, I would go and speak to your GP, explain the situation honestly (i know this can be the hard part) and hopefully they can point you in the right direction (Counselling or short term medication) to help you get back on an "even keel"

Either way good luck

I think you should make an appointment ASAP with a BACP registered therapist:

http://www.itsgoodtotalk.org.uk/therapists/

There will almost certainly be someone quite local to you who you can talk to about addiction and the issues you are facing which are contributing to it.

They will give you advice, guidance and help on whatever timescales you need. Each sessions will be approx £40 but well worth persising with for a few weeks or months.

Good luck!

As others have said, the fact you are posting about it shows that you yourself have realised that this may have already started to become an issue.

I had a friend who ended up in the same place as you after splitting with a partner, he essentially shut himself off from the world and got wasted on drinks and drugs at every possible opportunity . He only let us help him after crashing his car whilst off his face on the way to a dealer.

Please go and see your GP, or at very least phone an advice line if you'd rather the initial steps were anonymous. If you have any good friends then talk to them, if they really are good friends then they will not judge and will want to help you.

You've already said it yourself, you're not using it "recreationally" you are using it to "get you through" and in increasing amounts so IMO you're use is harmfull to you and I think you realise that.

If you can stop then stop but either way I'd recommend talking to someone professional.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, although I haven't replied it has helped me a lot. I'd like to thank you all even though I haven't listened to it all. With exception from tonight I've been very stubborn about distancing myself from recreation and necessity

I'd love to run out of money but unfortunately I can't see that happening. I'm on pretty good money at the moment because of my job and it covers this thing I hate so much

Then at least you won't fall into crime too soon.

Set a date in the not too distant future to stop.Say...in a month.Live it up til then, but you must stop at that time.Book a plane ticket to somewhere.

Do you think you might put your job at risk because of this drug taking?
