What first car?
Discussion
Hello everyone,
The time has finally come to buy my first car!
I passed my test one and a half years ago and have been a named driver on my parents car since however now I've decided I'm going to buy my own car mainly. I have been looking at cars for ages now so have an idea of what I can get regarding insurance. I'm looking to spend under £2000 for the car and around the same for insurance.
Currently I'm looking at a Ford Puma perhaps. I will only be able to get the 1.4 because of insurance unfortunately but I have got a quote of £1600 which I think is pretty darn good for my age with no NCB and could easily get a car for under £2000.
Another car I was thinking of getting was an Mk4 1.8 Astra Coupe. The insurance is pretty much exactly £2000 which was a pleasant surprise!
I'm not a fan of the usual saxos, fiestas, corsas etc and am after something a little different however it does need to be reliable and pretty decent on fuel.
Can anyone else recommend some other possibilities that fit the bill?
Thanks in advance
Tom

Hi Tom,
My son is in a similar situation to yourself and is looking at Clio's mainly I didnt even think a puma would be on the radar so thanks for that heads up!
You dont state how old you actually are I assume nearly 19. If not you could potentially look at classic insurance on some older mx5 etc but I think you need to be 21.
Where are you getting the ins quotes from?

I did want an mx5 but insurance is more like £2500 which is a bit too much at the moment unfortunately

There has been a few posts on this subject - I think the generally feeling is to go with some a bit different.
An old land-rover has been suggested a few times.
How confident are you with fixing cars? or getting your hands dirty?
I'm quite happy doing work on cars so don't mind getting my hands dirty. I think a land rover might be a little too thirsty though An old land-rover has been suggested a few times.

Puma would make a great fun first car imo (much better than the Astra as well). Have you tried getting a quote on a mk3 MR2? Early ones are just about in budget these days, and the handling is very good. MX5 would be fun reliable transport too.
I think the puma is looking like the favourite! Just this second did a quote on an mr2 and £3000+ on insurance

Will probably get laughed at here but what about a 1.4 105 MG ZR? Nippy motor, good fun to throw about. IMO they can look quite good, I loved mine!
Thanks for the suggestion, a good friend of mine who is on PH had one for his first car and said it was great
The insurance is £2100, do people think it would be worth the extra £500 over a puma?LuS1fer said:
The usual Fiesta 1.4 and 1.25s provide good handling.
Sportka?
Clios are cheap to insure. I know I'm ancient but a 182 is cheaper to insure for me than a Fiesta 1.4!
A friend of mine has had 2 Clios and found them to be very reliable too.
£4000 to insure a 182 Sportka?

and fiestas are more expensive that the puma to insure for what is a pretty similar car for me the key factor in a first car should be fun to drive at low speeds. My first car was a Cinquecento Sporting and it was a hoot around town and on open roads. Get something along these lines and build up some no claims whilst having low insurance payments-further enabling you to save for something cheeky as a second car eventually. You will build up knowledge at undangerous speeds whilst still having fun. My Dad always told me that until I had done 10000 miles I was still a total novice.! He was right and maybe a tad conservative. It takes a long time to become a competent driver. Stick to low cc in a light small car.

I'm 19 - my first (and current) car is a Astra Mk4 SXi 1.8 - 5 door version though
All I can say is it's a fantastic car and I recommend you get one; they're reasonably fast, cheap to fix, cheap to buy, cheap to insure and somewhat better than a standard first car (i.e. Clio, Corsa etc.)
What more do you want in a first car?
