Hi - can anyone help? in the recent flooding i drove my 530d MSport through, what i thought was, a shallow puddle. it wasnt. engine is now full of water and potentially knackered. in the event that i need a recon engine can anyone suggest any reputable firms that could help? i've heard some scare stories so would welcome any recommendations or advice

thanks

Engine will be very expensive new. Best bet will be a engine from a crashed car/ breakers yard, but I can see even that costing into four figures.

Have you considered claiming on your insurance? I know people with comprehensive policies have claimed successfully for such things in the past.

I'd definitely go down the insurance claim route unless you can get a very cheap engine, and your premium is very high.

The insurers' view should be that you've not had a mechanical breakdown; you've had a collision with an extremely wet rock :-)

Crewe Engines have an excellent reputation for work on Mercedes engines ; I don't know if they work on BMW though .

One of my Mercs had a new engine fitted by the previous owner due to high mileage (380K) and the invoice amongst the paperwork with the car showed it was six grand for a short motor . That was the M104 3 litre straight six , although a petrol engine not entirely dissimilar to the BMW engine being discussed and I'd imagine Mercedes and BMW pricing not too far apart .

few on ebay, most are around 2-3k mark

no matter what full comp policy your on i'm pretty sure it's better taking it through the insurance route

Might be worth going through "parts gateway" to see what quotes different breakers come back with. Nothing to loose and it'll give you a good idea on how much it might be.

Bryan.

ETA: I forgot to mention, the last time I went through parts gateway the quotes I was getting back were roughly half the price of the cheapest part on eBay. Seems eBay has gotten quite expensive these days.

the guy who sold it to me a month ago told me the MOT had just been done. it hadnt. i didnt check. yes, i know i am an idiot. so claiming on the insurance will result in a) no payout, b) a Cat-D write-off. i've also taken the view that if i was fully insured then a full payout would be at the expense of 2yrs worth of NCB, loss of my 600 excess and probably an offer of less than what the car is worth. lets call the total additional cost of a full payout being 1500-2000, which means that if thats all it costs to get the engine fixed or replaced then i wont be sobbing into my tea

I'd be amazed if you can do it for 2k, even for a second-hand engine of unknown origin fitted by a dodgy back-yard mechanic.

well there are a couple of ads on ebay saying engine purchase and fitting for 1750 inc VAT. clearly i dont know how legitimate those ads are, but circa 2k seems to be what people are advertising. i just need to find a reputable one

Well well into four figures, speaking from experience!

I have to say, I'm quite surprised that they're available so cheap. I guess lots of BMW x30ds must be getting written off in a way which doesn't damage the engine.
