Have a look at the DVLA vehicle check site, you can check if a car is taxed and what the engine size is, also the MID will let you check if it's insured.

Ok, thanks. So if it doesnt exist, will dvla issue it to me if I ask, or does that kind of thing not happen?

It may have been issued & vehicle scrapped, in which case I think you've missed out?
If it hasn't been issued then, from what I remember you can ask for it to be offered for sale. (there's even a contact email address been posted on PH, but I can't remember it)

The DVLA have a really good system for these situations.

You phone them up and tell them you are interested in a number plate that has not been issued or was once issued but is not listed on eg regtranfers as available. They kindly inform you that they will pass a message to a valuer who will put a reserve price on the plate and you will then be informed when the plate is going to be included in a DVLA auction.

The stupid part is the DVLA do not tell you when the plate maybe available, nor which auction it will be included in.

I found this really irritating as there is a plate I wish to buy and I fail to see why after expressing an interest in a otherwise unknown plate why the hell should it then be sent to auction for other people to potentially out bid me, especially the likes of reg transfers et al who are only interested in then selling the plate on.

Could possibly already be owned and be on retention.
