Don't know if this was deliberate or not, But what a sad day for Wakefield.

That's so sad, I'm surprised I didn't see the smoke from here as I'm only a couple of miles away frown

They seem to have left it for so long, just like Stanley church, the cinema in town etc, without really trying to do much with it. Almost hoping they will get torched and they can get around the listing and covenants. My guess is that it will miraculously get a block of flats built on it, to match those next door that nobody wants either.

Exactly what I was thinking, another 'accidental' fire makes way for new development,,

We live in the Stanley Royd conversion, it took me an hour to get from the bus station to our place while this was happening.

I've got some pictures which I'll upload when I'm home if anyone is interested, think I will have a walk down tonight and see how bad it actually is.

Thanks, I'd like to see those. Actually, I suspect I'll hate to see them, but you know what I mean.

DETECTIVES are questioning two men in connection with an arson attack which destroyed a church.

The two 23-year-olds were arrested last night (Monday) hours after fire ripped through the Church of St Faith’s on the corner of Eastmoor Road and Aberford Road.

Oldest trick in the book. The developers might not be directly involved but leave a building empty long enough.....

Same thing happened to Purston Hall in Featherstone (now flats of course)

Appologies for the picture quality, was taken with a phone while attempting to keep hold of a two year old who wanted to 'drive' the fire engines.

Sigh frown

I'm sure they could save the shell and restore it if they wanted. Use it for something actually useful. But nah they have more important things to spend money on like the grey concrete Hepworth gallery, the shopping area down Westgate (currently devoid of shops) and rebuilding the swimming pool (to replace the one in a beautiful Art Deco building that they demolished).

I don't suppose you have a picture of 'Tiffanys' by any chance ?

Sure does bring back some very happy memories of Wakey.

I'm not sure where Tiffanys is/was, so I'd say not.

Any details on where it was, and if it's since demolished, derelict or converted? smile

Am very surprised it hasn't happened sooner it's been empty a good few years. Massive shame tho. Lived very close for years. Scared me a bit when was a kid. But you never know they rebuilt Hatfield hall. So something maybe done to rebuild it

The people who did this should be strung up, it's irreplaceable.
If you could still find the skilled men to do the job I bet there would be £150K in the roof alone.....

It's a terrible shame, the building is a wreck now. This is the second time it has been set on fire in recent years although the last timwe it wasn't so bad.

I think the for sale, under offer sign has been up at least 3 years. By all accounts people have been living under the floors in there.

I'm far from religious but i think buildings like this should be saved and cherished for their historical value. No doubt it has a deeper spiritual meaning for many people.

How long until St. Peters on Aberford Road suffers a similar fate? That has been barriered off for a long time.
