If you were to drive 3 different Porsches in a day as part of an on road experience,, including a 911 cabriolet & boxster 987, which would be the 3rd choice from the following:

968
944 or 944 turbo
Cayman

Remember I'm talking affordability so not looking at anything expensive or bang up to date, so no Gt3's, panameras, 911 turbos etc.

I quite like the idea of mid engined, rear engined and front engined choice.

I think the Cayman, while better than a Boxster, would be too similar to it to really win a slot. If I could, I'd knock the Boxster off, take the Cayman and the 911 cab and a 944 Turbo.

944 S2 or 944 Turbo for me, I prefer the "old school factor" of the 944 compared to the Cayman, and the 968 isn't my cup of tea.

968 would get my vote. You're driving a Boxter which is very close to the Cayman and the 968 is a better drive than the 944, and yes I've driven both but this is just my opinion smile

Think I would go for an older car, so a 944/968 gets my vote

I'd say the 968 too, I've got a Clubsport and love it to bits. Total different experience to the Boxster S we have. They might not be as fast as some other Porsches but, as the E30 M3, they have a great chassis and stick to the road better than most.

You say the 968 isn't your cup of tea yet your vote goes with a 944S2? Other than a few bits of styling they are almost exact cars to drive only differences being the improvements in the 968 so really the 968 is a 944 but better.

As an owner, do you know what differences there are between the standard 968 and the clubsport?

How have you found reliability?

Would take me ages to type this.

968 Model Differences

Coupe - Club Sport - Sport

Coupes have a standard ride height, CS and Sport have 20mm shorter front springs and rear torsion bars are indexed 20mm lower.
Coupes usually have the standard leather seats or sport leather seats(both electrically adjustable), CS has fibre glass bucket racing seats, Sports have cloth 'comfort' seats.
Coupe has vinyl rear occasional seats, Club Sport has a shelf extending the rear luggage area forward, the Sport has cloth rear occasional seats added back in.
Coupes prior to '93 have a 3 spoke steering wheel then the 4 spoke airbag steering wheel, the CS and Sport have the 3 spoke CS steering wheel with the thicker rim(no airbag).
Coupes have an analogue clock in the centre console and a digital temp gauge on the dashboard, CS and Sports have a digital clock on the dashboard with a stopwatch.
Coupes have standard sound proofing, CS and Sports have reduced sound proofing.
Coupes have updated door cards, CS and Sport have the older 944 door cards.
Coupes have the 6 speaker stereo system, CS and Sports have 2 speakers.
Coupes have 16" Cup 1 alloy wheels, CS and Sports have 17" Cup 1 or Cup 2 alloys depending on year, with optional colour coding.
Coupes have black plastic vanity covers in the engine bay, CS and Sport don't have these.
Coupes have a standard battery and wiring loom, Club Sports have a smaller battery, alternator and a lighter wiring loom, Sports have the standard battery and wiring loom to accomodate the added electrics.
Coupes have a rear wiper, it was deleted on the CS and Sport and replaced with a watertight cover on the hole in the tailgate glass, sometimes known as a 'wiper delete bung'.
Coupes have heated windscreen washer jets, Club Sports do not.
Coupes have an underbonnet light, Sport and Club Sport do not.

The Sport(for the UK market only in 1994) was produced on the same production line as the Club Sport so is very similar in the chassis(chassis numbers correspond) and suspension. The key difference between the CS and the Sport is that the Sport has the bigger wiring loom and battery - for the extra electrics that have been put in, electric windows, tailgate release, central locking etc. It also has the occasional rear seats, unlike the CS and it has the comfort front seats.
Generally the Sport is a CS with the electrics added in and comfort seats.

Coupes were available in many different colours.
Coupes had options on the interior colours, seats and trim.

Club Sports were available in Guards Red, Speed Yellow, Black, White, Maritime Blue and Riviera Blue with or without Club Sport decals down the sides in either black, red or white.
Club Sports had colour coded backs to the front seats and a black interior.

Sports were available in many different colours.
Sports had black cloth seats and an all black interior.

More information on the Club Sports is available on this page : Porsche 968 Club Sport

Was reading that earlier with interest. I've been looking at the idea of a 3 Porsche experience for a while, so coincidence that has arisen today.

I already run 2 of the 3 cars on self drive, it's just which should be the 3rd if it do it.

Thanks falkster. Any reliability issues you've had or know of?

I never want to tempt fait but in 3 years of ownership I've replaced the door handle rubbers, a little bit of stitching on the boot carpet, replaced the boot struts and given it a couple of services.
It does need a new digital clock though.

Can't see a reason why not, so 928 also a consideration!

Well, I'd have the 928 biggrin Mostly because I've always fancied one and the 944/968 options don't have enough cylinders to get me properly excited, and as said the Cayman is too like the Boxster.

As a 944 owner, think a fettled turbo would be a good addition, I love my s2 but suspect it may feel a bit slow in comparison, a turbo with a nice 300 bhp would probably do the design more justice.

Got to say, having not even thought about the 928 previously, I'm taking a liking to them! If I take the plunge, it's going to be a hard choice!!

928 is more of a tourer though.

944 turbo. I used to have one and it was such a good handling car.
