I am sure this has been asked before but I can't find a definitive answer.
My 1998 XJR has always had some belt squeal on start up which went after a few minutes of being driven. It is slowly getting worse and taking about 10-15 mintues of driving to stop. I have tried WD40 which works but only for one start up.

A local garage do an upgrade but advised that this doesn't always stop the problem or may do initially but it may come back.

What can I do to get this fixed, I am beginning to get to the point where I am thinking of getting rid of the car?

Jaguar don't sell the single sided belts now only a double sided so you then also have to change the pullies, more expense

Tom at TLJaguar has the original belts in stock so can change them at a reasonable cost
Give him a call ang book the car in. He is verry knowedgeable on Jaguars

He is based ar post code RG40 4TS so not a million miles from you
His phone number is 0118-976-2899

I see you had another Thread 'Suspension fault warning'

Tom can also plug the car into his computer and find the fault
I expect the wire from the sensor to the loom, as easy job

As a point of interest, never ever spray your belts with WD40: its a widely held opinion that this works when in fact it makes it worse over time. As someone who used to be a FEAD engineer at JLR, I can tell you that all that lovely oil is absorbed by the belt and it will swell on the ribs. It does the same when you spill coolant on the belt so its very important to flush it with clean water.
First and foremost, fit new belts after throughly cleaning the pulleys with brake cleaner, not WD40.
If you get it reworked, ask the garage to check that all the machines are correctly aligned and are set on dowels. The most common causes of belt noise are misalignment over the pulleys or dirt ingress. If the belt is old, they tend to take a "set" where it would perfectly follow the outline of the pulley route were you to lay it on the floor.
Possibly, if its an old belt, this "set" aspect can cause noise where a reverse pulley profile is then forced over a pulley run in the opposite direction. Most likely, its going over the alternator where its giving the noise as that's the tightest wrap in the system.
Good luck!
