Fair enough when you are driving an articulated lorry or a van but surely a wave is friendlier when it's just a normal car?

What about if you have tinted rear windows? Eg on the motorway? They'll just think tt if you dont say thanks and if they cant see into your car? Hazards are fine IMO and everyone knows what your saying.
Edit: phone is ste for typing! Spelling errors sorted smile

I always do it. It is the clearest way of making it obvious you are saying thanks. Better than peering into the car in front to see if they are going to wave, or if they wont, therefore inducing mind boggling road rage.

I have tinted windows so i use my hazards. I did wave in the first few weeks but then realised nobody could see me from behind!

Unless you drive a Vauxhall, in which case you'll look like a prat for three miles while you try to cancel them.

Of course it is better than nothing by a long way but yesterday was at walking speed in heavy traffic and bright sunshine. It's quite a new thing but I am getting old perhaps...

PS My steering wheel obscures the dashboard indicator thing so I drive about with an indicator on quite a lot.

Absolutely this. The real art is the knowledge of whether to start with the right or left in the correct circumstances. Some try, but fail.

I did the hazard light flash in a company Combo once. 4 miles later the hazards eventually switched off, after I'd stopped and kicked the crap out of the switch, because it wouldn't stay in/off.

Yup. Trying to find the hazard switch on different cars is pointless.

I bought a BMW recently which had some stupid setting for the indicators. Took me ages arseing about with the idrive thing to switch them back to working in a traditional manner.

Reminds me of the time I was driving the girlfriends clio. Used hazard switch to say thanks to someone letting me out on to a busy road. Switched them off, and as I removed my finger from the switch it became detached, and the spring behind the switch propelled it on the rear seats! I spent the next minute driving with my finger wedged in the hole to stop the hazards from flashing, before I could pull over and wedge the switch back in with a piece of paper.

its all about the indicator dance, bonus points for ending it with a hazard flash
