Not sure whether to do this or not.

I have the aformentioned lens, had it for a while, but it doesnt see much use as its really soft at the edges at the wide end and with a max aperture of f4 I often find it too slow for what I use it for. Whats more my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 can cover the zoom end much better because its faster and sharper to boot.

I do quite like the look of a wide though so I definitely want to keep one in my kit.

Sigma do a 10mm anf 15mm diagnol fish eye and an 8mm circular. The 8mm looks ok on a crop body (7D) from what I have seen because it mostly fills the frame and has a really agressive wide view.

Havent seen much of the 10mm, but from reading, people regard the 15mm as much better. I think the 15mm is F2.8 and is nice and sharp. It looks to have a good fisheye effect too, but I have only seen this on full frame... I imagine on a crop it wont be so evident. Plus at 15mm I am not sure its usefully wider than the Tamron!

What other options do I have for a decent, fast wide?

To fish, or not to fish, that is the question......

...whether it is harder on the mind to suffer the distortion and aberration of outrageous light bending or take arms for sanity against the sea of derision and by keeping rectilinear defeat them!

As Ansel Shakespeare once said.

I have a 7D now

Will look into the tokina and the canon!

Tokina looks good! and has a the range I want (dont need to go to 17, got a lens for that) but down to 11 is fine. Seems to be very sharp!

If you can live with the limited range I would imagine the Tokina will be recommended highly.

Friend has one (nikon fit) and loves it, built like a tank.

I plan to add the Sigma you are considering chopping purely for the extra range.

What do you currently use it for?

I've got the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 on my Nikon D80, along with a 50mm F1.4 and absolutely love it. Was recently away in France for 10 days and didn't miss taking my 18-200mm zoom at all.

Lovely lovely lens, sharp and well built.. Go for it.

Tokina 11-16 2.8 is an awesome lens. Do it. You won't regret it.

->Tokina 11-16 2.8<- this is the only real option for wide and fast on crop.

Theres a number of OK wide zooms for crop, nothing spectacular and pretty much no primes.

Which is one reason I went for a 5d2.

Another vote for the Tokina 11-16 f2.8. I just made the exact same switch for the same reasons and am very happy

Don't buy the Tokina. My search for a reasonably cheap one is difficult enough without another f****r snatching them away from me at the last second.

Lol.

BTW there is a 11-16 mkII coming out in a few months with better coatings for flare etc.

I have a 7D and after loads of research and trying the Sigma 8mm, Canon 10-22, Sigma 10-24, Tamron 10-24, I went with the Canon.

Had I stuck with crop I would probably have gone for the same.

Canon seems the best compromise unless you need f2.8

All sorts really, mostly swimming stuff at the moment. Like to get right close into the blocks with the wide angle and catch the dives, turns and other things we do in surf lifesaving/speed lifesaving. Pool lighting is piss poor and f4 isnt enough unless I switch to those HI-ISO modes with lots of noise. Also use it for landscapes, but then the softness can ruin the shots...some of the ones I took off the top of table moutain look awful round the edges...like it wasnt focused properly.

Need to wait a bit anyway as i'll have to go home home and find the original box for the sigma before I sell it. Gonna go have a look at example shots from the canon, but those I saw of the Tokina looked brilliant.
