stupid question about switches

Crossover unless there's an "uplink" port or one of the ports has an "uplink" or "crossover" switch next to it, in which case you can use a standard cable...
I think
{edit:} oh, and some switches have auto-sensing ports, so in that case it wouldn't matter...

Nope - you shouldn't connect an uplink to an uplink unless you use a crossover cable - i.e. an "uplink" port is simply a normal one that has the crossover built in. Therefore 2 uplinks joined have been crossed and uncrossed, so you'd need to cross it again to connect!
