I just had a look at mine and just as well too (you will see why in a moment) the pipes both start off near the remote oil filter (although the return pipe probably goes all the way to the banjo remote fitting on the pump...):

Then the pipes go to the oil thermostat clamped onto the front member of the fiberglass tub.
Then over to the passenger side behind the radiator, round the side...

then across the front of the radiator to the cooler:

Now the more observant of you may spot that neither my oil filter bracket nor my oil thermostat bracket are bolted to anything, this is because I undid them a few weeks ago to move the engine about to do the clutch, and I forgot to bolt them back down again.... only done a few hundred miles in the mean time... oops!

Yeah that's right, you can just about see the edge of it behind the grille in the photo above.

My 390 originally had the oil cool out at the front but didn't have any oil thermostat in the circuit. This led to over-cooling of the oil and rapid failure of the camshaft drive to the oil pump and distributor.

I repositioned the cooler behind the water radiator and fitted a thermostat into the circuit. I took the opportunity to remount the oil filter the other way up at the other side of the engine bay (so even if the flap valve failed it wouldn't all drain back into the sump) - but there isn't room here if you have power steering.

Mounting the cooler right at the front is better for a racing application, it allows you to use a smaller, lighter cooler for the same cooling effect - but for a road car it's better near the fan for cooling in traffic. It also makes it far less prone to stone damage.

I got the pipes and connectors from a local factor, I took the bits in to make sure the threads were all compatible - this is TVR after-all. Demon Tweeks and other catalogues will supply by mail order.

scratchchin I always thought that the oil cooler was 'first' in the airflow as the oil would be hotter than the water, so pulling the air through the cooler and then through a small portion of the water rad would be better than pulling warm air off the rad, through the oil cooler, if you follow. The amount of flow developed by the fan will be the same irrespective of the position of the oil cooler.

When I had my Esprit, the inbuilt mounting brackets of its oil cooler had corroded away through galvanic activity; I couldn't weld whatever alloy it was for love nor money so ended up pop-rivetting two new brackets to the remains of the old ones! As I recall, that filter had common-or-garden BSP threads.

Think about it the other way - if the water radiator is cooler than the oil the air will get two goes at cooling things. Water rad at 105 degrees, air flowing through it warms up to say 95, oil rad at 140 degrees then the air at 95 degrees can still do some cooling. Other way around the oil cooler may warm up the water.

If the car is stopped and the oil cooler is right out front then the fan does not contribute to oil cooling directly at all.

IANAHOCE - I am not a heating or cooling engineer.
